1. Moto G5 Plus:

The most awaited budget phone of the year has arrived! The new Moto G5 Plus is the 5th generation smartphone in Motorola’s ‘Moto G’ series which has a great legacy in India, every phone in the Moto G series has been a huge hit and has been one of the best phones or probably the best in its price segment. The Moto G5 Plus has arrived at a time when its predecessor Moto G4 Plus was still competitive enough and was still doing great so, a lot more can be expected from it. Let’s start with the design of the Moto G5 Plus. It is the first time for a Moto G phone to sport a full metal unibody design… Expand Review

although it has little plastic at the top and bottom of the back for antennas and on the side edges. The build quality is good and it is comfortable to hold in hands. It looks beautiful from the front as well as rear, more importantly, it looks different from other metal unibody smartphones, most of which look alike. Thanks to its big and beautiful rear camera circle, the Moto G5 Plus looks unique and stylish. It comes with a 5.2 inches Full HD screen and has very good display quality. The 5.2 inches screen size is like the new sweet spot, the phone is big enough while still being comfortable. The Moto G5 Plus is powered by the very popular and battery efficient 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which delivers very good performance, it is smooth for normal day to day usage and heavy games are playable without lagging and over heating. This is the most powerful Moto G ever. The Adreno 506 GPU handles the graphical performance and the phone comes in two variants, one with 3 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage and another with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage, both the variants are expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card. Now, coming to the very important camera department, everyone should know that camera was the biggest highlight of the Moto G4 Plus and it was one of the best camera phones under 15000 Rs. In the Moto G5 Plus, Motorola has reduced the megapixel count from 16 MP to 12 MP for the rear camera compared to the Moto G4 Plus but, the picture quality has only improved. The colors are more natural and low light photographs are also good with low noise. However, unlike the Moto G4 Plus, the Moto G5 Plus lacks Laser Autofocus but includes Dual Autofocus Pixels for fast focusing. It supports 4K video recording and comes with EIS (electronic image stabilisation) which works well. The 5 MP front camera is also a very good selfie shooter, it is supported with display flash for low light selfies. Summing up the camera capabilities, the Moto G5 Plus stands taller from the crowd, it is in most cases the best camera phone under 15000 Rs. with Honor 6x being the closest competitor. It runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with almost Stock Android UI and will get the future Android version updates for at least next few years. Motorola has added some helpful actions like twist the phone to open camera, chop twice to turn on flashlight, etc. The phone includes a very fast fingerprint scanner which can also be used for navigation replacing the onscreen navigation buttons, it takes a little time to get used to it but is a nice addition as it frees up lot of screen space. It is dual sim phone with proper dedicated slots for the two sim and microSD card. The Moto G5 Plus comes with water repellent nano coating and supports NFC for additional connectivity. The phone lacks a Notification LED but Motorola’s ‘Moto Display’ does the job to some extent. It is backed by a non-removable 3000 mAh Li-Ion battery which gives good battery backup and also supports fast charging. It easily lasts for a day with medium to heavy usage.

Overall, the Moto G5 Plus is a great complete package. It has excellent cameras, very good performance, latest software, beautiful design, good battery backup and all the required features. It gives a great balanced user experience and is suitable for all types of users. It is an almost perfect and definitely the best phone under 15000 Rs. in India, you can go with it without second thoughts.

2. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (4GB RAM):

Xiaomi has launched the new Redmi Note 4 which is the successor to its massively popular Redmi Note 3 which is the no. 1 best selling online smartphone in India so, the Redmi Note 4 has very big shoes to fill in, let’s see what all it has got. Starting with the design, it is built on a similar design language like the Redmi Note 3 with few differences like a 2.5D curved glass on front and a better back. The excellent build quality is one of the best at its price, it also feels nice and premium in hands… Expand Review

The Redmi Note 4 comes with a 5.5 inches Full HD screen with good display quality. Sadly, it misses out on Gorilla Glass screen protection. It runs on the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Snapdragon 625 Processor and comes in 2/3/4 GB RAM variants with Adreno 506 GPU. It obviously doesn’t deliver performance like the Snapdragon 650 on the Redmi Note 3 but it is still pretty much capable of handling everything smoothly, it also handles games well without much heating. On the camera front, it packs a 13 MP rear camera which is a better shooter than the 16 MP rear camera of the Redmi Note 3, it has good picture quality with good colors and details. The 5 MP front camera is also good, it comes with various beautification modes which enhance the selfies. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Xiaomi’s MIUI 8.0 running on top, the company has promised the Nougat update in the coming few weeks. The MIUI 8.0 is a beautiful ROM with lots of customisations, it also offers lots of useful features like Dual Apps (two accounts of apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, etc.), Second Space (creates a new partition in the phone which is protected with password/fingerprint and can be used to install completely different sets of apps and also has a separate gallery, basically first space and second space behave like two different phones), although many manufacturers provide features like second space but in Xiaomi’s MIUI it is perfectly executed, it’s fast and easy to access, the MIUI also offers quick ball. In our opinion, among all the ROMs from different Android manufacturers the MIUI is the most feature rich and by far the best ROM out there, it adds a lot of value to the phone. The phone packs a good fingerprint scanner and also includes Infrared Blaster which allows you to control your TV, AC, music system and many other electronic appliances, it is a very good feature and comes handy. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 128 GB via a hybrid slot. Coming to another good thing about the phone, it is backed by a 4100 mAh battery which delivers excellent battery backup. Disappointingly, the Redmi Note 4 misses out on fast charging which few other competitors offer at this price, it is not a deal breaker but it would have made things sweeter.

Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is a great budget smartphone. It has almost perfect balance of everything, be it design, performance, camera, software or battery life it delivers a very satisfactory experience. So, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with its great user experience is one of the best phones under 15000 Rs. in India.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is still available and can still be a good choice. Under Rs. 15,000, Xiaomi has also launched an excellent smartphone Mi Max with a huge 6.44 inches screen although, it won’t be the right choice for most of the users but those who have fallen in love with the phone’s bigger screen and its advantages and are ready to sacrifice a bit of comfort in handling the phone will absolutely love it, it is almost perfect for its intended user type.

3. Lenovo Z2 Plus:

Lenovo has recently launched the Lenovo Z2 Plus in India, however, it is actually the Lenovo Zuk Z2 that was launched in China a little earlier. They have just ditched the Zuk branding here in India and launched the phone with only Lenovo branding. Starting with the build and design of the phone, it comes with a fibre-glass frame unlike metal used in most high-end phones these day. The company says that, using the fibre-glass frame helps in reducing the weight and rightly so, despite having a 3500 mAh battery, it weighs at 149 grams only. The front and back of the phone are… Expand Review

covered with 2.5D curved glass. The phone comes in white and black colors, it looks good and feels premium. It comes with a compact 5 inches screen with Full HD display which has good quality. The Z2 Plus is powered by a 2.15 GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with Adreno 530 GPU and as expected the performance is absolutely excellent, it plays heaviest of the games smoothly but heats up a bit during heavy gaming although it is acceptable. It comes in two variants, one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage and other with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, however the phone doesn’t support expandable storage and doesn’t include the microSD slot. It runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with ZUI 2.0 running on top. The ZUI comes with stock Android like UI with Google Now launcher, however there are many tweaks and added features in the UI. The most interesting and unique thing in the phone is the physical home button below the screen, which Lenovo calls as U-Touch 2.0. The U-Touch 2.0, firstly acts as a fingerprint scanner but, it also acknowledges a touch, a press, double press and end to end swipe. You can customise this button and select which actions should be performed for double press, long press, long touch and left to right swipe, like a touch can be used for back, a press to open home screen, double press can open camera, long touch for recent apps, long press for Google Now and changing apps by swiping left to right on the button. The concept of this button is a real good idea and improves user experience, however, it will take some time to learn it but at the same time, the company is also allowing on-screen navigation buttons. The Z2 Plus packs a 13 MP rear camera with 4K video recording support, it has decent picture quality, it’s not the best but it is not bad also. However, the 8 MP front camera is very good. It also includes various health related sensors and a U-Health app, which tracks your steps, walking, running, etc. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It features a USB Type-C v2.0 port for fast charging and data syncing. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 3500 mAh battery which delivers very good battery life. It also comes with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support.

Overall, the Lenovo Z2 Plus is a compact, well designed and a very balanced smartphone. Innovative feature like the U-Touch home button is a nice addition. At the same time, it is a performance powerhouse and is the cheapest phone in India to come with the powerful Snapdragon 820 processor. It ticks almost all the boxes right and is one of the best phones under 15000 Rs. in India if you require high performance or a little compact 5-inches phone.

4. Lenovo P2 (3 GB):

After the Vibe P1 and Vibe P1 Turbo, Lenovo has launched the new Lenovo P2 in its ‘P series’ which is known for phones with big batteries. And this time the Lenovo P2 comes with an epic 5,100 mAh battery, a great thing about the phone is that, usually phones with big batteries like this focus too much on the battery aspect and fail to deliver a balanced experience in other departments but, this is not the case with the Lenovo P2. First and a very important thing you notice when you hold this phone is despite the huge battery, it doesn’t feel all that bulky… Expand Review

and weighs at 177 grams and is just 8.3 mm thick, to give you a better idea, the very hit OnePlus 2 weighs 175 grams, has 9.9 mm thickness and has 3300 mAh battery so, Lenovo has done a commendable work here by keeping the weight low, few extra grams can really mess with the user experience. The battery also supports fast charging and charges the phone from 0 – 100% in around 2 hours, which is very fast. Lenovo also supplies a USB OTG adapter with the phone, using which the Lenovo P2 can be used as a powerbank to charge other phones. The phone also comes with a dedicated physical toggle on the right side for the data saving mode, it almost kills everything in the phone and only keeps on basic functions and saves a lot of battery. The Lenovo P2 comes in a metal unibody design which is well-built and sturdy, although it doesn’t have a very beautiful or outstanding design and it looks simple. It packs a very good 5.5 inches Full HD Super AMOLED display protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It runs on the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor coupled with 3/4 GB RAM and handles everything smoothly, it also handles games well without much heating. It is also battery efficient but, at this price, Lenovo itself is offering the Snapdragon 820 in its Z2 Plus so a better processor would have made things much better. The Lenovo P2 packs a 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera and both the cameras are decent, they are not the best and turn out grainy sometimes but are acceptable. The phone runs on Android v6.0.1 Marshmallow and will be getting the Nougat update soon, Lenovo’s Pure UI runs on top. The Pure UI is kind of a trimmed down version of the Vibe UI, it packs the excellent features like Dual apps but tries to stick closer to stock Android. It is customisable, stable and well optimised. The fingerprint scanner is situated on the physical button below the screen, it is fast and accurate, this button also recognises a press, a tap and a press and hold and can be used for home, back and recent apps operations, you can also turn on and off the on screen buttons. It comes with Dual sim, 4G and VoLTE support, includes 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 128 GB via microSD card but uses the hybrid slot. It also includes NFC for added connectivity.

Overall, the Lenovo P2 is absolutely fantastic with its battery performance but, more importantly it is a well rounded phone and does a pretty good job in all the departments and that too without being bulkier, which makes it a very good choice not only for those who desperately need a great battery backup but for normal day to day users also. What’s bad in getting that additional juice without paying for its disadvantages! It is the phone with best battery life under 15000 Rs in India.

5. Huawei Honor 6X:

Huawei after a very long time has launched a balanced budget smartphone, the Honor 6X, which has all the potential to sell well in the Indian market. It packs a metal unibody design with small plastic parts at the top and bottom on the back. The phone looks good and has good build quality, the 2.5D curved glass on the front also adds to the visual appeal and comfort. It has a thickness of 8.2mm and weighs 162 grams. It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD screen with good display quality and accurate colors. The Honor 6X is powered… Expand Review

by Huawei’s own Octa Core HiSilicon Kirin 655 processor clocked at 2.1 GHz, it is paired with Mali-T830MP2 GPU and comes in 3 GB and 4 GB RAM variants. The performance is good, it runs smoothly for normal usage and browsing and also handles games well, however for graphic intensive games it may lag a little at times. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Huawei’s Emotion 4.1 UI, it is decent but has to be improved more. The Honor 6X’s biggest highlight is in the camera department. It comes with dual rear camera setup having a 12 MP primary camera and a 2 MP camera which captures depth. The picture quality is excellent and it produces nice bokeh effect (blurred background) like DSLR cameras as well. The camera app also offers lots of features, a Pro mode and also allows to change the focus of image after it is taken. Even the 8 MP front camera has very good quality. Overall, in the camera department, the Honor 6X challenges Moto G4 Plus and offers one of the best picture quality at its price. It packs a very fast fingerprint scanner which can also be used to take selfies, browse photos, answering calls, etc. It is a Dual sim smartphone with 4G and VoLTE support. It comes in two storage variants – 32 GB and 64 GB and can be further expanded up to 128 GB via a hybrid slot. Another good thing about the phone is the non-removable 3340 mAh battery which delivers very good battery backup and also comes with fast charging support.

Overall, the Huawei Honor 6X is a very good smartphone, it offers excellent cameras, good design and performance. However, when you see it as a complete package it still fails to beat the Moto G5 Plus or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. Also, when it comes to the pricing, considering the fierce competition it should have costed Rs. 2,000 less for both the variants, that said it still is a very good phone and can be purchased for its excellent camera offering.

    Hi Rahul,
I have been using moto g 2nd gen since its launch. There has been minor problems. Now I want a 4G supported phone, I guess MOTO G5 plus could be a good option. But the 3000mAh battery is not much appreciable. Now Honor 6X and Lenovo P2 seem quite interesting too.

So, will you suggest me the best among three with their cons and pros?

    • April 12, 2017 at 4:45 pm

Hi, because of the battery efficient Snapdragon 625 processor the Moto G5 Plus delivers good battery backup. But if you need a serious battery backup, the Lenovo P2 can be a great choice.

hi rahul .. i want to buy decent performance phone under 15000 but confused .. should i go for sony xa dual or lg k10 (2017) and yes then there r chinese brands too … like z2 plus and moto g5 plus .. pls suggest.

A big no for Sony and LG, their phones do not simply withstand competition. Go with the Moto G5 Plus, it is currently the best phone under 15000 Rs.

    Hi Rahul,

Confused between moto g5 plus(32 gb) and redmi note 4(64 gb). Specifications wise redmi note 4 beats moto g5 plus in most of the departments along with price (4k less) but moto comes with brand name and I think build quality will be better as compared to note 4. Please guide. Really confused.

HI Rahul want to know which phone I should buy? moto g4 plus or g5 plus.buget is 15k and g5 plus 16gb is not available so what I do tell me please

    • March 31, 2017 at 7:57 pm

Hi, go with the Moto G5 Plus only. You can wait for few days for the 16 GB variant to become available or else go with the 32 GB variant, spending 2k more is not a bad investment for bigger RAM and storage.
