1. Moto G5 Plus:

The most awaited budget phone of the year has arrived! The new Moto G5 Plus is the 5th generation smartphone in Motorola’s ‘Moto G’ series which has a great legacy in India, every phone in the Moto G series has been a huge hit and has been one of the best phones or probably the best in its price segment. The Moto G5 Plus has arrived at a time when its predecessor Moto G4 Plus was still competitive enough and was still doing great so, a lot more can be expected from it. Let’s start with the design of the Moto G5 Plus. It is the first time for a Moto G phone to sport a full metal unibody design… Expand Review

although it has little plastic at the top and bottom of the back for antennas and on the side edges. The build quality is good and it is comfortable to hold in hands. It looks beautiful from the front as well as rear, more importantly, it looks different from other metal unibody smartphones, most of which look alike. Thanks to its big and beautiful rear camera circle, the Moto G5 Plus looks unique and stylish. It comes with a 5.2 inches Full HD screen and has very good display quality. The 5.2 inches screen size is like the new sweet spot, the phone is big enough while still being comfortable. The Moto G5 Plus is powered by the very popular and battery efficient 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which delivers very good performance, it is smooth for normal day to day usage and heavy games are playable without lagging and over heating. This is the most powerful Moto G ever. The Adreno 506 GPU handles the graphical performance and the phone comes in two variants, one with 3 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage and another with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage, both the variants are expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card. Now, coming to the very important camera department, everyone should know that camera was the biggest highlight of the Moto G4 Plus and it was one of the best camera phones under 15000 Rs. In the Moto G5 Plus, Motorola has reduced the megapixel count from 16 MP to 12 MP for the rear camera compared to the Moto G4 Plus but, the picture quality has only improved. The colors are more natural and low light photographs are also good with low noise. However, unlike the Moto G4 Plus, the Moto G5 Plus lacks Laser Autofocus but includes Dual Autofocus Pixels for fast focusing. It supports 4K video recording and comes with EIS (electronic image stabilisation) which works well. The 5 MP front camera is also a very good selfie shooter, it is supported with display flash for low light selfies. Summing up the camera capabilities, the Moto G5 Plus is an excellent camera phone and stands taller from the crowd, hardly few phones match up to it under 20000 Rs. It runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with almost Stock Android UI and will get the future Android version updates for at least next few years. Motorola has added some helpful actions like twist the phone to open camera, chop twice to turn on flashlight, etc. The phone includes a very fast fingerprint scanner which can also be used for navigation replacing the onscreen navigation buttons, it takes a little time to get used to it but is a nice addition as it frees up lot of screen space. It is dual sim phone with proper dedicated slots for the two sim and microSD card. The Moto G5 Plus comes with water repellent nano coating and supports NFC for additional connectivity. The phone lacks a Notification LED but Motorola’s ‘Moto Display’ does the job to some extent. It is backed by a non-removable 3000 mAh Li-Ion battery which gives good battery backup and also supports fast charging. It easily lasts for a day with medium to heavy usage.

Alternatives: If you compulsorily want a bigger phone, the Motorola Moto M (64 GB) with 5.5 inches 2.5D curved screen can be a great option at Rs. 17,999 however, as a package the Moto G5 Plus is better among the two.

Overall, the Moto G5 Plus is a great complete package. It has excellent cameras, very good performance, latest software, beautiful design, good battery backup and all the required features. It gives a great balanced user experience and is suitable for all types of users. It is an almost perfect and definitely the best phone under 20000 Rs. in India, you can go with it without second thoughts.

2. Lenovo Z2 Plus (64 GB):

Lenovo has recently launched the Lenovo Z2 Plus in India, however, it is actually the Lenovo Zuk Z2 that was launched in China a little earlier. They have just ditched the Zuk branding here in India and launched the phone with only Lenovo branding. Starting with the build and design of the phone, it comes with a fibre-glass frame unlike metal used in most high-end phones these day. The company says that, using the fibre-glass frame helps in reducing the weight and rightly so, despite having… Expand Review

a 3500 mAh battery, it weighs at 149 grams only. The front and back of the phone are covered with 2.5D curved glass. The phone comes in white and black colors, it looks good and feels premium. It comes with a compact 5 inches screen with Full HD display which has good quality. The Z2 Plus is powered by a 2.15 GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with Adreno 530 GPU and as expected the performance is absolutely excellent, it plays heaviest of the games smoothly but heats up a bit during heavy gaming although it is acceptable. It comes in two variants, one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage and other with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, however the phone doesn’t support expandable storage and doesn’t include the microSD slot. It runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with ZUI 2.0 running on top. The ZUI comes with stock Android like UI with Google Now launcher, however there are many tweaks and added features in the UI. The most interesting and unique thing in the phone is the physical home button below the screen, which Lenovo calls as U-Touch 2.0. The U-Touch 2.0, firstly acts as a fingerprint scanner but, it also acknowledges a touch, a press, double press and end to end swipe. You can customise this button and select which actions should be performed for double press, long press, long touch and left to right swipe, like a touch can be used for back, a press to open home screen, double press can open camera, long touch for recent apps, long press for Google Now and changing apps by swiping left to right on the button. The concept of this button is a real good idea and improves user experience, however, it will take some time to learn it but at the same time, the company is also allowing on-screen navigation buttons. The Z2 Plus packs a 13 MP rear camera with 4K video recording support, it has decent picture quality, it’s not the best but it is not bad also. However, the 8 MP front camera is very good. It also includes various health related sensors and a U-Health app, which tracks your steps, walking, running, etc. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It features a USB Type-C v2.0 port for fast charging and data syncing. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 3500 mAh battery which delivers very good battery life. It also comes with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support.

Overall, the Lenovo Z2 Plus is a compact, well designed and a very balanced smartphone. Innovative feature like the U-Touch home button is a nice addition. At the same time, it is a performance powerhouse and is the cheapest phone in India to come with the powerful Snapdragon 820 processor. It ticks almost all the boxes right and is the best phone under 20000 Rs. in India if you require high performance or a small 5-inches phone.

3. Lenovo P2 (4 GB):

After the Vibe P1 and Vibe P1 Turbo, Lenovo has launched the new Lenovo P2 in its ‘P series’ which is known for phones with big batteries. And this time the Lenovo P2 comes with an epic 5100 mAh battery, a great thing about the phone is that, usually phones with big batteries like this focus too much on the battery aspect and fail to deliver a balanced experience in the other departments but, this is not the case with the Lenovo P2. First and a very important thing you notice when you hold this phone is despite the huge battery, it doesn’t feel all that bulky… Expand Review

and weighs at 177 grams and is just 8.3 mm thick, to give you a better idea, the very hit OnePlus 2 weighs 175 grams, has 9.9 mm thickness and has 3300 mAh battery so, Lenovo has done a commendable work here by keeping the weight low, few extra grams can really mess with the user experience. The battery also supports fast charging and charges the phone from 0 – 100% in around 2 hours, which is very fast. Lenovo also supplies a USB OTG adapter with the phone, using which the Lenovo P2 can be used as a powerbank to charge other phones. The phone also comes with a dedicated physical toggle on the right side for the data saving mode, it almost kills everything in the phone and only keeps on basic functions and saves a lot of battery. The Lenovo P2 comes in a metal unibody design which is well-built and sturdy, although it doesn’t have a very beautiful or outstanding design and it looks simple. It packs a very good 5.5 inches Full HD Super AMOLED display protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It runs on the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor coupled with 3/4 GB RAM and handles everything smoothly, it also handles games well without much heating. It is also battery efficient but, at this price, Lenovo itself is offering the Snapdragon 820 in its Z2 Plus so a better processor would have made things much better. The Lenovo P2 packs a 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera and both the cameras are decent, they are not the best and turn out grainy sometimes but are acceptable. The phone runs on Android v6.0.1 Marshmallow and will be getting the Nougat update soon, Lenovo’s Pure UI runs on top. The Pure UI is kind of a trimmed down version of the Vibe UI, it packs the excellent features like Dual apps but tries to stick closer to stock Android. It is customisable, stable and well optimised. The fingerprint scanner is situated on the physical button below the screen, it is fast and accurate, this button also recognises a press, a tap and a press and hold and can be used for home, back and recent apps operations, you can also turn on and off the on screen buttons. It comes with Dual sim, 4G and VoLTE support, includes 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 128 GB via microSD card but uses the hybrid slot. It also includes NFC for added connectivity.

Alternatives: Lenovo’s Vibe X3 can still be a very good choice for multimedia lovers. If you want professional level camera in a smartphone, you can also go with the Lenovo Vibe Shot which comes with 16 MP camera with infrared autofocus, 6P lens, OIS, 16:9 BSI sensor, tricolor LED flash, dedicated shutter button and all the Pro settings.

Overall, the Lenovo P2 is absolutely fantastic with its battery performance but, more importantly it is a well rounded phone and does a pretty good job in all the departments and that too without being bulkier, which makes it a very good choice not only for those who desperately need a great battery backup but for normal day to day users also. What’s bad in getting that additional juice without paying for its disadvantages! It is the phone with best battery life under 20000 Rs in India.

Heavy users Normal day to day users Heavy gamers Moderate gamers Camera lovers Selfie lovers Multimedia consumption

Pros Cons
  • Wonderful battery backup + Excellent fast cahrging
  • Good design
  • Good display
  • Good performance
  • Good UI
  • Manages to maintain low weight and thickness despite big battery
  • Cameras could have been better

4. Asus ZenFone 3 ZE520KL:

The Zenfone 2 series of Asus was a good hit in India and recently, Asus has launched its much awaited Zenfone 3 series of smartphones. The Zenfone 3 ZE520KL is one of the starting model in the Zenfone 3 line up apart from the Zenfone 3 Laser. When compared to the Zenfone 2, the Zenfone 3 comes with great improvements in the design department, both in terms of looks and build quality. It comes with a metal body and a 2.5D curved glass on the front and back, the metallic edges on the side are also rounded, which makes… Expand Review

the phone very comfortable to hold. The back panel has concentric circle design, which gives a good glossy reflection when brought under light. It weighs at 144 grams and has a thickness of 7.7mm. Summing up the design, the Zenfone 3 packs excellent looks, great premium build quality and a comfortable to use design. It sports a 5.2 inches Full HD display which has a very good display quality. It has 600nits brightness which means the visibility under outdoor conditions or direct sunlight is good. The Zenfone 3 ZE520KL is powered by the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor designed with the 14nm process, which is advanced technology designed to improve performance, use lesser power and save battery. It is coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 3 GB RAM and delivers good performance. Although, at this price the Snapdragon 820 processor was expected but still the Snapdragon 625 is also very good, obviously we cannot compare it with the Snapdragon 820 but still it will not disappoint you. Coming to the camera, the Zenfone 3 packs a 16 MP rear camera with Sony’s latest IMX298 sensor (also used in Xiaomi Mi5 and OnePlus 3), f/2.0 aperture, 4-axis OIS, 3-axis EIS, dual-LED flash and supports 4K video recording. Asus has also introduced TriTech AF which combines laser, phase detection and continuous auto-focus, which results in really fast auto-focus. It can capture really good quality images and gets full marks. The camera lens is also protected with Sapphire Glass. The 8 MP front camera is also very good. Also, Asus’s camera app is also very feature rich, it has lots of filters and modes and also includes a complete manual mode which lets you adjust the camera’s raw settings the way you want. The phone runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Asus’s ZenUI 3.0 running on top. The ZenUI comes with lots of added features and customizations. It has good speakers and a good fingerprint scanner situated at the back. It uses USB Type-C 2.0 for fast data syncing and charging. It is a dual sim phone with 4G support on both the slots. It packs 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 2 TB with a microSD card, using a hybrid slot. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 2650 mAh battery which delivers acceptable battery backup but a bigger battery would have made the phone much better.

Alternatives: If you need a bigger screen, you can go with the Zenfone 3 ZE552KL with 5.5 inches screen, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, priced at Rs. 27,999. The Asus Zenfone 3 Laser and the Asus ZenFone 3 Max (ZC553KL) are also available under 20000 Rs. but are not very good choices.

Overall, the Asus Zenfone 3 ZE520KL is a great phone, it packs great design, good performance, excellent cameras and all the latest features and delivers a true flagship like experience. A very good buy at this price.

Newly Launched

5. ZTE Nubia Z11 Mini S:

ZTE has launched another lite variant of its flagship ZTE Nubia Z11 called as ZTE Nubia Z11 Mini S. The Nubia Z11 Mini S comes directly in competition with the Moto G5 Plus having price, processor, screen size and a lot more in common. Let’s see how good the phone is. Starting with the design, the Mini S comes with a premium looking metal unibody design. It is compact and comfortable to hold in hands but is a bit slippery. It takes some inspirations from the new iPhone 7 and has same design and placement for the antennas on the back, which look good though… Expand Review

The red glowing home button below the screen also looks good. It sports a 5.2 inches Full HD 2.5D curved screen and has good display quality and nice viewing angles. The color reproduction is also good and the software also allows you to set the color temperature as per your liking. The phone runs on the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 4GB RAM and delivers good lag free day to day usage and handles gaming comfortably without overheating. Cameras are the biggest highlights of the phone and it packs some big numbers as well. It comes with a 23 MP f/2.0 aperture Sony IMX318 sensor with PDAF. It is a very good shooter, the pictures come out sharp and detailed, the shutter speed is also very fast. The 13 MP front facing camera with Sony IMX258 sensor, f/2.0 aperture and 80 degree wide angle is a pretty good shooter as well. The selfies come out beautiful, there is also a ‘screen flash’ to assist you with low light selfies. The camera app comes with a full professional mode and includes lots of fun and useful modes and filters as well. Overall, it is a very good camera smartphone. Sadly, the Nubia Z11 Mini S still runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with company’s Nubia 4.0 UI running on top. It offers some additional features like double click on the edge to go back, swipe up/down from the edge to switch or start apps, swipe repeatedly from the edge to free up RAM, swipe from both edges to adjust brightness and swipe up from bottom of the screen to split the screen into two to let you access two apps at the same time. It packs a good fingerprint scanner at the back and uses USB Type-C port for data syncing and charging. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It includes big 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 200 GB via microSD card but uses a hybrid slot. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which gives good battery backup (thanks to the processor) but sadly doesn’t support fast charging.

Overall, the ZTE Nubia Z11 Mini S is a good smartphone. It packs good performance and good design. However, the excellent cameras are its biggest highlight. But when you compare it with the similar Moto G5 Plus, it fails to win as a complete package. Still, for selfie lovers wanting a balanced all round smartphone, the Nubia Z11 Mini S can be the best phone under 20000 Rs.
