Best Smartphone under 20000 since Dec-16

1. Motorola Moto M:

Motorola has finally launched its new Moto M smartphone in India in the under Rs. 20,000 price segment. Earlier, Motorola’s successful Moto X Play was available in this price segment but, after the launch of the Moto G4 Plus at a lesser price, it lost its charm and since then all eyes were on the upcoming Moto phone in this price. So, here it is – the new Moto M, let’s see how it is. Starting with the design, it packs a full metal unibody design which is the first for a Moto phone… Expand Review

it looks very good and is very premium and well-built. A 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass sits on the front while the back has nice curved edges which gives a comfortable grip. Overall, the design is very good but, Motorola devices always had a stand out design from the crowd, this time it is actually a design which is very familiar in these day’s budget smartphones, however it is really good for its price. The 5.5 inch Full HD display is pretty good, it has good color temperatures and nice viewing angles, the display in the Indian variant is not a Super AMOLED display however. Coming to the performance front, Motorola phones are never meant for high performance but with the Qualcomm processors they usually come with, they deliver a stable lag-free experience but with the Moto M, the company has gone with the 2.2 GHz Octa-Core MediaTek Helio P15 processor, fortunately it delivers decent lag free experience which performs very well for day-to-day operations, the Mali T860mp2 GPU handles games well also but, when it comes to heavy gaming, this is not the phone to go for, better performances are available at lower prices. The phone comes in two variants, one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage and the other with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage, going with the later is recommended. It also supports a microSD card upto 128 GB via the hybrid slot. The Moto M runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow which will be soon updated to the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, the UI is the same stock Android with no bloatwares or unnecessary customisations. Pure Android experience and fast Android updates are the strength of the Moto M like all the other Motorola phones. It sports a 16 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, 1.0um pixel, Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) and dual LED flash, however it misses the Laser Autofocus present in the Moto G4 Plus. The picture quality is very good most of the times however, images can come with evident noise in low light conditions sometimes. The 8 MP front camera with 1.12um pixel size clicks good selfies and comes with many Beautification modes. Motorola’s camera app is simple but also offers a PRO mode. It packs a good fingerprint scanner situated on the back below the camera module, which is again the first for a Moto phone as all the earlier Moto phones had the fingerprint scanner on the front. A very good thing, the phone comes with Water repellent nano-coating so you can go a little careless with water when the phone is around. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3050 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports Motorola’s fast charging via USB Type-C port. Its Dolby Atmos speakers deliver rich and loud audio.

Overall, the Moto M comes with an excellent premium/beautiful full metal unibody design, which is by far one of the best at this price. The phone also comes with balanced performance, stock and stable fast updating UI, decent cameras, good sound and all the required features. It hardly misses out on anything important and delivers a very good and balanced experience. It is the best phone under 20000 Rs. in India at present.

2. Lenovo Z2 Plus (64 GB):

Lenovo has recently launched the Lenovo Z2 Plus in India, however, it is actually the Lenovo Zuk Z2 that was launched in China a little earlier. They have just ditched the Zuk branding here in India and launched the phone with only Lenovo branding. Starting with the build and design of the phone, it comes with a fibre-glass frame unlike metal used in most high-end phones these day. The company says that, using the fibre-glass frame helps in reducing the weight and rightly so, despite having… Expand Review

a 3500 mAh battery, it weighs at 149 grams only. The front and back of the phone are covered with 2.5D curved glass. The phone comes in white and black colors, it looks good and feels premium. It comes with a compact 5 inches screen with Full HD display which has good quality. The Z2 Plus is powered by a 2.15 GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with Adreno 530 GPU and as expected the performance is absolutely excellent, it plays heaviest of the games smoothly but heats up a bit during heavy gaming although it is acceptable. It comes in two variants, one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage and other with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, however the phone doesn’t support expandable storage and doesn’t include the microSD slot. It runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with ZUI 2.0 running on top. The ZUI comes with stock Android like UI with Google Now launcher, however there are many tweaks and added features in the UI. The most interesting and unique thing in the phone is the physical home button below the screen, which Lenovo calls as U-Touch 2.0. The U-Touch 2.0, firstly acts as a fingerprint scanner but, it also acknowledges a touch, a press, double press and end to end swipe. You can customise this button and select which actions should be performed for double press, long press, long touch and left to right swipe, like a touch can be used for back, a press to open home screen, double press can open camera, long touch for recent apps, long press for Google Now and changing apps by swiping left to right on the button. The concept of this button is a real good idea and improves user experience, however, it will take some time to learn it but at the same time, the company is also allowing on-screen navigation buttons. The Z2 Plus packs a 13 MP rear camera with 4K video recording support, it has decent picture quality, it’s not the best but it is not bad also. However, the 8 MP front camera is very good. It also includes various health related sensors and a U-Health app, which tracks your steps, walking, running, etc. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It features a USB Type-C v2.0 port for fast charging and data syncing. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 3500 mAh battery which delivers very good battery life. It also comes with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support.

Overall, the Lenovo Z2 Plus is a compact, well designed and a very balanced smartphone. Innovative feature like the U-Touch home button is a nice addition. At the same time, it is a performance powerhouse and is the cheapest phone in India to come with the powerful Snapdragon 820 processor. It ticks almost all the boxes right and is the best phone under 20000 Rs. in India if you require high performance or a small 5-inches phone.

3. LeEco Le Max2:

LeEco has launched the successor to its older flagship Le Max as the Le Max2. Like the name, there are not many differences between the old and the new phones but it certainly packs great set of hardware specifications. The Le Max2 comes with a very well-built premium metallic design, which looks beautiful and at the same time feels good in the hands. It packs a big 5.7 inches Quad HD display with whooping 515 ppi pixel density. The display quality is amazing and specially when you play the 2k videos you… Expand Review

will notice the difference but, at the same time, one should know that 2k videos/content is still not very popular in India, neither the internet speed/costs are good to allow you streaming it online so, don’t just pick the phone because it has the 2k display. It is powered by the latest and very powerful Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 820 processor paired with 4 GB of RAM. The performance is excellent for every type of usage, be it heavy gaming, multitasking or other graphics intensive usage, it handles everything well without any severe heating issue. The 21 MP rear and the 8 MP front camera of the Le Max2 are very good performers, the rear camera comes with OIS and can record 4K videos. The phone runs on the Android Marshmallow based company’s EUI, which is beautiful, customisable and easy to use although, it will take some time to get used to it. Another USP of the phone is, it uses the new CDLA (Continual Digital Lossless Audio) technology using the Type-C USB port for headphones ditching the traditional 3.5 mm jack. The audio quality is good. The phone includes fingerprint scanner, Infrared sensor and supports NFC. Like every LeEco phone, it also comes with the company’s ‘Supertainment’ package free for one year. It is a dual sim phone with 4G support and comes with 32 GB of internal storage but there is no memory expansion slot. The Le Max2 is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3100 mAh battery which has average battery backup although, it supports fast charging but, with the 2K display, a bigger battery would have been great. If we talk about the downsides, the lack of microSD slot can be a disappointment for some, while the missing 3.5 mm headphone jack can be seen in both ways, early adopters will like it while, traditional users will find it a little annoying at stages. Also, beware that you won’t be able to charge the phone and use the headphones simultaneously as, there is only one port for both the jobs. The phone with the weight of 185 grams also feels a little bulky.

Overall, the LeEco Le Max2 is premium beautiful smartphone which performs like a beast and also has great display and cameras. Also, recently it has got a big price cut, after which it is now the best phone under 20000 Rs. with excellent performance and bigger screen but, one of the phone’s USP (USB Type-C headphones) is also its biggest downside so make sure you can live with it before buying, apart from it, it is a great smartphone.

Newly Launched

4. Lenovo P2 (4 GB):

After the Vibe P1 and Vibe P1 Turbo, Lenovo has launched the new Lenovo P2 in its ‘P series’ which is known for phones with big batteries. And this time the Lenovo P2 comes with an epic 5100 mAh battery, a great thing about the phone is that, usually phones with big batteries like this focus too much on the battery aspect and fail to deliver a balanced experience in the other departments but, this is not the case with the Lenovo P2. First and a very important thing you notice when you hold this phone is despite the huge battery, it doesn’t feel all that bulky… Expand Review

and weighs at 177 grams and is just 8.3 mm thick, to give you a better idea, the very hit OnePlus 2 weighs 175 grams, has 9.9 mm thickness and has 3300 mAh battery so, Lenovo has done a commendable work here by keeping the weight low, few extra grams can really mess with the user experience. The battery also supports fast charging and charges the phone from 0 – 100% in around 2 hours, which is very fast. Lenovo also supplies a USB OTG adapter with the phone, using which the Lenovo P2 can be used as a powerbank to charge other phones. The phone also comes with a dedicated physical toggle on the right side for the data saving mode, it almost kills everything in the phone and only keeps on basic functions and saves a lot of battery. The Lenovo P2 comes in a metal unibody design which is well-built and sturdy, although it doesn’t have a very beautiful or outstanding design and it looks simple. It packs a very good 5.5 inches Full HD Super AMOLED display protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It runs on the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor coupled with 3/4 GB RAM and handles everything smoothly, it also handles games well without much heating but is not for heavy gamers. It is also battery efficient but, at this price, Lenovo itself is offering the Snapdragon 820 in its Z2 Plus so a better processor would have made things much better. The Lenovo P2 packs a 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera and both the cameras are decent, they are not the best and turn out grainy sometimes but are acceptable. The phone runs on Android v6.0.1 Marshmallow and will be getting the Nougat update soon, Lenovo’s Pure UI runs on top. The Pure UI is kind of a trimmed down version of the Vibe UI, it packs the excellent features like Dual apps but tries to stick closer to stock Android. It is customisable, stable and well optimised. The fingerprint scanner is situated on the physical button below the screen, it is fast and accurate, this button also recognises a press, a tap and a press and hold and can be used for home, back and recent apps operations, you can also turn on and off the on screen buttons. It comes with Dual sim, 4G and VoLTE support, includes 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 128 GB via microSD card but uses the hybrid slot. It also includes NFC for added connectivity.

Alternatives: Lenovo’s Vibe X3 can still be a very good choice for multimedia lovers. If you want professional level camera in a smartphone, you can also go with the Lenovo Vibe Shot which comes with 16 MP camera with infrared autofocus, 6P lens, OIS, 16:9 BSI sensor, tricolor LED flash, dedicated shutter button and all the Pro settings.

Overall, the Lenovo P2 is absolutely fantastic with its battery performance but, more importantly it is a well rounded phone and does a pretty good job in all the departments and that too without being bulkier, which makes it a very good choice not only for those who desperately need a great battery backup but for normal day to day users also. What’s bad in getting that additional juice without paying for its disadvantages! A very good smartphone under 20000 Rs.

  • Should have costed atleast Rs. 1,000 less

5. OnePlus 2:

OnePlus is a company which got millions of fans all over the world with its first only phone – the Flagship Killer OnePlus One. And now we have got the second phone from the company – the 2016 Flagship Killer OnePlus 2. Let’s start with its design. The OnePlus 2 is made up with a high quality alloy of aluminium and magnesium, the phone is excellently well-built, it’s very sturdy and very premium. Not to forget, it comes with beautiful back panels in different designs from Sandstone to Bamboo and more… Expand Review

The phone sports a 5.5 inches Full HD screen protected by latest Corning Gorilla Glass 4, the display quality is very good. The phone is powered by extremely powerful hardware, it has got the 1.8 GHz Octa Core Snapdragon 810 Processor which is coupled with 4 GB RAM, you yourself can understand that it will have exceptional performance. The phone has got a 13 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, Laser Autofocus, OIS, & Dual-LED Flash, in-short the camera is really excellent! The 5 MP front camera is good as well. The phone comes with Fingerprint sensor that allows you to quickly unlock your device, it also comes with future-proof reversible Type-C USB Cable for charging and data transfer. The phone has a physical button on the side which allows you to toggle the phone into silent mode, just like the iPhones. It runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with the company’s own Oxygen UI running on top of it, the Oxygen UI looks almost similar to the stock Android UI but it comes with extra features and added capabilities. The phone is backed by 3300 mAh battery.

Overall, the OnePlus 2 is still a very good smartphone, it is not only powerful but, every aspect of the phone is thought in details so, it gives a great user experience as well. It is still a good value for money and you can go with it.
