1. Xiaomi Mi 5:

After all the wait Xiaomi has finally launched its new flagship Xiaomi Mi 5 and as expected from the company, it’s yet another master piece. Starting with the design, the phone looks very beautiful, it has a metallic frame and 3D glass on the rear which is curved towards the edges, which gives a good grip and feel. The phone looks great from all the angles and feels premium, one can notice the attention to details. It packs a 5.15 inches Full HD screen with 428 ppi pixel density which has amazing display quality, while the… Expand Review

Corning Gorilla Glass 4 covers both the front and rear glasses. If we talk about the performance, it is the first phone in India to come with Qualcomm’s latest flagship Snapdragon 820 processor, which is also currently one of the best processors in the world so, it goes without saying that you don’t need to worry about playing the heaviest of the games or doing heavy multitasking but, it also heats a little. It is paired with 3GB of RAM (Xiaomi Mi 5 also has a 4GB RAM variant but it is not launched in India) and Adreno 530 GPU. Moving on to another department where the Mi 5 excels, the camera, it comes with a 16 MP rear camera with Sony’s latest IMX298 sensor with PDAF, 4-axis OIS, f/2.0 aperture, dual-LED flash, Slow-mo videos @ 120 fps and 4K video recording, it also includes Sapphire glass cover for lens protection. On the front, it has a 4 MP camera with 2 micron pixel and f/2.0 aperture for selfie lovers. Beyond the specs, the picture quality of both the cameras is really very impressive, even the low-light photography on the Mi 5 is very good. The phone runs on Android v6.0 Marshmallow based MIUI 7. The Xiaomi Mi 5 comes with 32 GB internal storage (64 GB & 128 GB variants not launched in India) powered by UFS 2.0 which is faster than previous technologies but, it misses out on microSD card slot. It is dual sim phone with support for Indian 4G bands and VoLTE. It comes with fingerprint scanner integrated into the physical home button on the front, apart from locking the screen it also allows to lock apps and hide folders. It also comes with Type-C USB port, NFC and IR Blaster. The phone is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery with Quick charge 3.0 fast charging support. Despite a big battery and metal, glass body the phone weighs just 129 grams.

Overall, the Mi 5 is truly a great flagship phone, while the 4 GB RAM variant is even better, the 3 GB RAM variant isn’t a bad choice either and it still stands ahead of the competition as a complete package and is currently the best phone under 25000 Rs. in India.

2. Moto Z Play:

Motorola has launched its most awaited Moto Z series which comes with the Moto mods in India. The Moto Z Play is the cheaper sibling in the Moto Z series and is launched at Rs. 24,999. Starting with the design, it packs a slick metal and glass body which is premium and looks very beautiful and has a thickness of just 6.99 mm. The big circle on the back houses the camera, flash and the Moto branding and looks classy. good viewing angles. The Moto Z play runs on the 2 GHz Octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 3 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU. The Snapdragon 625 is a mid budget processor and is not expected at this price where most of the competitors are offering a Snapdragon 8xx series processor. The performance of the Moto Z Play is good however, there will be no problem in day-to-day usage, browsing, multitasking, and even heavy gaming also. Coming to the software part, the Moto Z Play runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with almost Stock Android UI with some useful added functionalities. The Moto Z Play sports a 16 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, Laser autofocus and Dual-LED flash and is a very good performer in both good and bad lighting conditions. It supports 4K video recording, however it lacks OIS. The 5 MP front camera comes with f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash as well, it also clicks good selfies. The phone packs a fingerprint scanner below the screen, it is fast and accurate however, the button only acts as a fingerprint scanner and doesn’t work as the home button. The highlight of the phone is the support for the Moto Mods, to explain in details, Moto Mods are the swappable back covers which attach to the phone via strong magnets and can be interchanged very easily. There are 5 Moto Mods currently, the Insta-Share Projector Mod which converts your phone into a mini projector and can prove very handy for small presentations and meetings, the JBL SoundBoost Mod which adds loud rich quality stereo sound to your phone, it also comes with kickstand so pull it and there is no need to carry any other portable speaker for music, the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod, which converts your phone into a true digital camera with 10x optical zoom, xenon flash, physical shutter and zoom buttons and grip like standard cameras, the Incipio offGRID™ Power Pack Mod which is a powerbank mod and adds extra battery life to the phone and lastly, the Moto Style Shells which give different styles and looks to the phone. The Moto Mods are obviously great additions but they are very costly. The phone comes with Water repellent nano coating and includes USB Type-C port. A great thing about the phone is the big 3510 mAh battery which supports Turbo Charging and provides a very good battery backup. Despite the big battery the phone has just 6.99 mm thickness.

Overall, the Moto Z Play is a great beautiful smartphone, it is not the most powerful smartphone at its price but everything is very good and balanced in the phone and if you plan to purchase the Moto Mods also, it is the most different phone and will provide an unmatched experience. Even without the Moto Mods, the Moto Z Play, if you are not a very heavy gamer can be a great choice under 25000 Rs.

3. Huawei Honor 8:

Huawei has launched its much awaited mid-range smartphone Honor 8 in India. Starting with the design of the phone, the Honor 8 comes with a very stylish and premium design. It packs 2.5D curved glass on both front and rear and has a metallic frame in between. It looks beautiful and feels great and gets full marks for build quality. The Honor 8 comes with a 5.2 inches Full HD screen, the screen size is good for one-handed usage and the display quality is very good. The phone runs on Huawei’s own… Expand Review

2.3 GHz Octa-core Hisilicon Kirin 950 processor coupled with 4 GB RAM and Mali-T880 GPU. The processor’s performance is good but at this price, the Honor 8’s rivals come with Qualcomm’s much more powerful Snapdragon 820 processor. However, if we consider the performance of the phone standalone, it works well for normal usage, heavy multitasking and heavy gaming also and, doesn’t heat up much while gaming. The greatest part of the Honor 8 is its camera department. It packs two 12 MP rear cameras which work simultaneously, out of which one clicks color images and the other one clicks monochrome (black and white) images. Both the images are then merged, it allows good depth in the images and also allows you to change the aperture size even after clicking an image. It also includes laser assist autofocus which is very fast and the camera app provides lots of options and a full manual mode. Talking about the image quality, the camera performance is great. The 8 MP selfie shooter which comes with auto beautification is also very good. The Honor 8 runs on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow with company’s Emotion UI 4.1 which comes with lots of added features and customizations. The phone packs a fast and accurate fingerprint scanner situated on the back, it can also be used for some extra activities like, to swipe photos in the gallery. A very disappointing thing in the phone is, it is a single sim device. The phone supports 4G but lacks support for VoLTE, which is now much more important after the entry of Reliance Jio in the Indian market. For storage, it comes with 32 GB internal memory which is expandable upto 128 GB via microSD card. It has USB Type-C port for data syncing and charging. The Honor 8 is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 3000 mAh battery which comes with fast charging support and provides good battery backup. The audio quality via the speaker on the phone is rich and loud.

Overall, the Huawei Honor 8 is a very good smartphone, it packs great cameras, great design, good performance and a very good all round experience. Almost everything about the phone is good but, providing only Single Sim slot seems like a crime. It still can be a great choice under 25000 Rs.

4. Vivo V5 Plus:

Vivo has launched its new flagship phone Vivo V5 Plus in India which makes a massive claim of being the Selfie king with its dual front cameras. It packs a 20 MP primary selfie camera and an 8 MP secondary selfie camera for capturing the additional depth-of-field, the selfies come out just amazing with very good details and bokeh effect. It is one of the best selfie phones in the world and absolute best at its price. The 16 MP rear camera is good as well. Talking about the design, the Vivo V5 Plus looks like an iPhone 7 clone… Expand Review

from the back, which is not a bad thing! It looks beautiful and has very good build quality. The 5.5 inches Full HD display is crisp and clear, it has good colors and good overall quality. When it comes to performance, it packs the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor coupled with 4 GB RAM. The phone was launched at Rs. 27,980 and still runs on the Snapdragon 625 which is a disappointment. However, the performance is good, it handles day-to-day usage, multitasking and bit of gaming very well but heavy gamers must not settle with this as you get the likes of Snapdragon 821 in the OnePlus 3T. It runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow based Funtouch OS 3.0 and Vivo’s love for the iPhones is evident here also. The Funtouch OS is heavily customised and is as close to iOS as possible, even the icons look like straight taken out from the iOS. The fingerprint scanner below the homescreen is very fast. The music experience on the phone through Vivo’s Hi-Fi chip is very good. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support and packs 64 GB of internal storage and sadly doesn’t include a microSD slot. The phone is backed by a non-removable 3160 mAh battery which provides good battery backup and supports fast charging. Disappointingly, the phone doesn’t come with Type-C USB port.

Overall, the Vivo V5 Plus has an amazing selfie camera and selfie lovers won’t find anything better, even the rear camera and design is good. However, it packs a weaker processor and demands a premium price, specially when its competitors are offering a lot of value for money and great performance, it feels overpriced. So it is simple, if you do not care about anything else apart from Selfies, go with the Vivo V5 Plus otherwise give it a miss.

5. HTC Desire 10 Pro:

HTC, in an attempt to regain its lost grounds has launched its Desire 10 Pro in the mid budget segment in India. It comes in a beautiful design with metallic body, having a soft rubberised back which feels very good in hands. It comes in black and white colors and both the color variants have a golden lining running through the edges, antennas and camera circle which adds a charm to the design. The HTC Desire 10 Pro sports a 5.5 inches Full HD display and has very good quality. It runs on the 1.8 GHz Octa Core Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 processor… Expand Review

at this price much better processors are expected, at least the Snapdragon 625 could have been used. It comes coupled with 4 GB RAM and the performance is good enough for daily usage and moderate to heavy gaming. The phone packs a 20 MP ƒ/2.2 aperture rear camera which is an excellent shooter, the pictures in low lighting conditions also come out good. It also comes with Laser Autofocus for quick focusing. The 13 MP ƒ/2.2 aperture clicks great selfies as well, it is assisted with display flash for low light selfies. The camera app also includes lots of modes, one amongst them is the selfie panorama mode which comes out quite handy. It also comes with a full pro mode. The phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow based HTC Sense UI which is fast, beautiful, customisable and light weight. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 2 TB via a microSD card. However, it has a hybrid slot, which means you can either use the two sim or one sim and a microSD card at a time. The phone comes with a fast fingerprint scanner situated on the back, which can also be used to protect apps apart from unlocking the phone. The HTC Desire 10 Pro comes with HTC’s BoomSound technology and delivers excellent audio quality via headphones. It also includes NFC for additional communication. The phone is powered by a 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports fast charging.

Alternatives: The HTC One A9 and HTC One M9+ (Prime Camera Edition) are also available around the same price but are not so good buy.

Overall, the HTC Desire 10 Pro is a good balanced smartphone. It comes with excellent cameras, very good design and good all round features. However, it is not a performance powerhouse and is overpriced, the competition offers a lot more here.
