1. Xiaomi Mi 5:
After all the wait Xiaomi has finally launched its new flagship Xiaomi Mi 5 and as expected from the company, it’s yet another master piece. Starting with the design, the phone looks very beautiful, it has a metallic frame and 3D glass on the rear which is curved towards the edges, which gives a good grip and feel. The phone looks great from all the angles and feels premium, one can notice the attention to details. It packs a 5.15 inches Full HD screen with 428 ppi pixel density which has amazing display quality, while the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 covers both the front and rear glasses. If we talk about the performance, it is the first phone in India to come with Qualcomm’s latest flagship Snapdragon 820 processor, which is also currently one of the best processors in the world so, it goes without saying that you don’t need to worry about playing the heaviest of the games or doing heavy multitasking. It is paired with 3GB of RAM (Xiaomi Mi 5 also has a 4GB RAM variant but it is not launched in India) and Adreno 530 GPU. Moving on to another department where the Mi 5 excels, the camera, it comes with a 16 MP rear camera with Sony’s latest IMX298 sensor with PDAF, 4-axis OIS, f/2.0 aperture, dual-LED flash, Slow-mo videos @ 120 fps and 4K video recording, it also includes Sapphire glass cover for lens protection. On the front, it has a 4 MP camera with 2 micron pixel and f/2.0 aperture for selfie lovers. Beyond the specs, the picture quality of both the cameras is really very impressive, even the low-light photography on the Mi 5 is very good. The phone runs on Android v6.0 Marshmallow based MIUI 7. The Xiaomi Mi 5 comes with 32 GB internal storage (64 GB & 128 GB variants not launched in India) powered by UFS 2.0 which is faster than previous technologies but, it misses out on microSD card slot. It is dual sim phone with support for Indian 4G bands and VoLTE. It comes with fingerprint scanner integrated into the physical home button on the front, apart from locking the screen it also allows to lock apps and hide folders. It also comes with Type-C USB port, NFC and IR Blaster. The phone is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery with Quick charge 3.0 fast charging support. Despite a big battery and metal, glass body the phone weighs just 129 grams. Overall, the Mi 5 is truly a great flagship phone, while the 4 GB RAM variant is even better, the 3 GB RAM variant isn’t a bad choice either and it still stands ahead of the competition as a complete package and is currently the best phone under 25000 Rs. in India.

Motorola has launched its most awaited Moto Z series which comes with the Moto mods in India. The Moto Z Play is the cheaper sibling in the Moto Z series and is launched at Rs. 24,999. Starting with the design, it packs a slick metal and glass body which is premium and looks very beautiful and has a thickness of just 6.99 mm. The big circle on the back houses the camera, flash and the moto branding and looks classy. A big 5.5 inches screen is onboard, it comes with Full HD Super AMOLED display and has good quality and good viewing angles. The Moto Z play runs on the 2 GHz Octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 3 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU. The Snapdragon 625 is a mid budget processor and is not expected at this price where most of the competitors are offering a Snapdragon 8xx series processor. The performance of the Moto Z Play is decent however, there will be no problem in day-to-day usage, browsing and multitasking, although heavy games may not perform most smoothly but, there is no reason to disappoint as the phone has a lot to offer. Coming to the software part, the Moto Z Play runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with almost Stock Android UI with some useful added functionalities. The Moto Z Play sports a 16 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, Laser autofocus and Dual-LED flash and is a very good performer in both good and bad lighting conditions. It supports 4K video recording, however it lacks OIS. The 5 MP front camera comes with f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash as well, it also clicks good selfies. The phone packs a fingerprint scanner below the screen, it is fast and accurate however, the button only acts as a fingerprint scanner and doesn’t work as the home button. The highlight of the phone is the support for the Moto Mods, to explain in details, Moto Mods are the swapable back covers which attach to the phone via strong magnets and can be interchanged very easily. There are 5 Moto Mods currently, the Insta-Share Projector Mod which converts your phone into a mini projector and can prove very handy for small presentations and meetings, the JBL SoundBoost Mod which adds loud rich quality stereo sound to your phone, it also comes with kickstand so pull it and there is no need to carry any other portable speaker for music, the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod, which converts your phone into a true digital camera with 10x optical zoom, xenon flash, physical shutter and zoom buttons and grip like standard cameras, the Incipio offGRID™ Power Pack Mod which is a powerbank mod and adds extra battery life to the phone and lastly, the Moto Style Shells which give different styles and looks to the phone. The Moto Mods are obviously great additions but they are very costly. The phone comes with Water repellent nano coating and includes USB Type-C port. A great thing about the phone is the big 3510 mAh battery which supports Turbo Charging and provides a very good battery backup. Despite the big battery the phone has just 6.99 mm thickness. Overall, the Moto Z Play is a great smartphone, it is not the best of the performer at this price but rest everything is very good and if you plan to purchase the Moto Mods also, it is the most different phone and will provide an unmatched experience. Even without the Moto Mods, the Moto Z Play, if you are not a heavy gamer can be a great choice under 25000 Rs.

The Zenfone 2 series of Asus was a good hit in India and recently, Asus has launched its much awaited Zenfone 3 series of smartphones. The Zenfone 3 ZE520KL is one of the starting model in the Zenfone 3 line up apart from the Zenfone 3 Laser. When compared to the Zenfone 2, the Zenfone 3 comes with great improvements in the design department, both in terms of looks and build quality. It comes with a metal body and a 2.5D curved glass on the front and back, the metallic edges on the side are also rounded, which makes the phone very comfortable to hold. The back panel has concentric circle design, which gives a good glossy reflection when brought under light. It weighs at 144 grams and has a thickness of 7.7mm. Summing up the design, the Zenfone 3 packs excellent looks, great premium build quality and a comfortable to use design. It sports a 5.2 inches Full HD display which has a very good display quality. It has 600nits brightness which means the visibility under outdoor conditions or direct sunlight is good. The Zenfone 3 ZE520KL is powered by the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor designed with the 14nm process, which is advanced technology designed to improve performance, use lesser power and save battery. It is coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 3 GB RAM and delivers good performance. Although, at this price the Snapdragon 820 processor was expected but still the Snapdragon 625 is also very good, obviously we cannot compare it with the Snapdragon 820 but still it will not disappoint you. Coming to the camera, the Zenfone 3 packs a 16 MP rear camera with Sony’s latest IMX298 sensor (also used in Xiaomi Mi5 and OnePlus 3), f/2.0 aperture, 4-axis OIS, 3-axis EIS, dual-LED flash and supports 4K video recording. It can capture really good quality images and gets full marks. The camera lens is also protected with Sapphire Glass. The 8 MP front camera is also very good. Also, Asus’s camera app is also very feature rich, it has lots of filters and modes and also includes a complete manual mode which lets you adjust the camera’s raw settings the way you want. The phone runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Asus’s ZenUI 3.0 running on top. The ZenUI comes with lots of added features and customizations. It has good speakers and a good fingerprint scanner situated at the back. It uses USB Type-C 2.0 for fast data syncing and charging. It is a dual sim phone with 4G support on both the slots. It packs 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 2 TB with a microSD card, using a hybrid slot. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 2650 mAh battery which delivers acceptable battery backup but a bigger battery would have made the phone much better. Overall, the Asus Zenfone 3 ZE520KL is a great phone, it packs great design, good performance, excellent cameras and all the latest features and delivers a true flagship like experience. A very good buy at this price. If you need a bigger screen, you can go with the Zenfone 3 ZE552KL with 5.5 inches screen, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, priced at Rs. 27,999.

4. Oppo F1 Plus:
Oppo has recently launched its new flagship phone, the Oppo F1 Plus in India which, the company is touting as ‘Selfie Expert’. The USP of the phone is its 16 MP front camera which comes with a f/2.0 aperture lens. It can click some really amazing selfies with great depth both in normal and low light conditions, however low light selfies would have been the best if it also included a front flash but to compensate, it turns the screen white and uses ‘Screen Flash’ which does the job to some extent. The Oppo F1 Plus also allows to take Selfie Panorama and comes with ‘Beautify 4.0’ which makes your selfies even more beautiful. On a rare occasion, it packs a smaller than the front, 13 MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and LED flash, it also captures good quality images. Talking about the design, the Oppo F1 Plus looks inspired from the iPhone 6s to a great extent, whether you like this fact or not, it looks beautiful and feels very premium with its metallic unibody design and it has just 6.6 mm of thickness. The Oppo F1 Plus looks inspired from the iPhones from the inside as well, the Android 5.1 lollipop based Color OS 3.0 on which the phone runs has very similar icons and UI like the iPhones, again, it isn’t bad and looks beautiful. The phone packs a 5.5 inches Full HD AMOLED display protected with Gorilla Glass 4. It is powered by a 2 GHz Octa Core Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 Processor coupled with 4 GB RAM, it delivers good performance and handles everything well but at this price, better processors are expected and if you are a hardcore gamer, you can give this a miss. It also includes a fingerprint scanner situated on the physical home button on the front below the screen, it is fast and accurate. It is a dual sim smartphone with 4G support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is further expandable upto 128 GB via microSD card. The phone is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 2850 mAh battery which comes with Oppo’s own VOOC Flash Charge, fast charging technology. At the same time, the phone misses out features like NFC and IR blaster which must be present at this price. Overall, the Oppo F1 Plus is a very good smartphone, it packs a great selfie camera, good premium design, decent performance and delivers a good complete experience and can be a good choice without doubts. However, if you love playing high-end games, there are better options at this price but, selfie lovers, this will be the best phone under 25000 Rs. for you.

5. BlackBerry DTEK50:
BlackBerry has finally launched a Pure Android touchscreen phone which is available at a mid-budget price and which it should have launched many years ago. Being a late entrant, BlackBerry had many advantages, the most important being a long time to study and understand the market and analyse what actually sells, let’s check if the company has hit the sweet spot or not. Starting with the design, the BlackBerry DTEK50 packs a pretty good design, it has got a sturdy metallic frame and a textured back panel with a soft silicon like material, it feels very good in hands and gives a good grip, the phone at the same time looks good. It sports a 5.2 inches Full HD display with very good quality and colors and has good viewing angles as well. On the performance front, it is powered by the 1.5 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Processor coupled with 3 GB RAM and Adreno 405 GPU. Seeing the Snapdragon 617 at this price tag is disappointing, it delivers good performance for normal usage and multitasking but gaming is not a good experience so, if you love playing games on smartphones you have much better options. Now, let’s come to the software part, the area where BlackBerry has put most of its efforts in this smartphone. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with company’s own BlackBerry launcher (also available on Play Store for other Android phones), the user interface although is not highly modified and you can see Stock Android in many places. The BlackBerry launcher provides few useful features like the pop-up widgets, productivity tab (appears by swiping on the right of the screen, it includes emails, to-do, calendar and recent contacts) and a nicely organised dock. Now let’s come to the highlight of the phone, the DTEK app, from where the phone gets its name and on the base of which, the company calls it the World’s Most Secure Android smartphone. The DTEK app encrypts the data from your phone and continuously monitors your phone and tells you how to completely secure your phone, it allows you to see and control the permissions to other apps, also provides features like ‘Factory Reset Protection’ which, in the event if your phone is stolen doesn’t allow factory reset without your Google account information. The phone also comes loaded with many useful BlackBerry apps like BlackBerry Keyboard, BlackBerry Hub, BlackBerry Calendar, Contacts by BlackBerry, Notes by BlackBerry, Tasks by BlackBerry, BlackBerry Camera, BlackBerry Password Keeper and few others. The DTEK50 also packs a physical button called ‘Convenience key’ on the middle right side, it can be customised to perform any action which you desire like opening camera or opening calendar, calculator or toggling WiFi, torch, etc. Coming to the camera department, it packs a 13 MP rear and an 8 MP front camera, the picture quality of both the cameras is about average, day light photos are decent but bad light photos are grainy. The phone comes with Dual front and rear facing speakers which have pretty good and loud audio quality. Now, let’s talk about three big disappointing things in the phone, first, it is a Single SIM device, second, it packs only a 2610 mAh non-removable battery, although it supports fast charging but a bigger battery is compulsory these days, third, it doesn’t include a fingerprint scanner. It has 16 GB internal storage which is expandable upto 2 TB via microSD card. Overall, the BlackBerry DTEK50 apart from being a secure phone doesn’t impress much. It packs weaker performance and misses out on some important features, although it also packs good display, design and good set of applications, as a package there are much better smartphones in the market.
