1. OnePlus 3T:

The OnePlus 3 was already enough to win over the competition in the mid-range flagship phones segment but, the company was not satisfied with it, they have launched an upgraded version of the phone in just six months – the OnePlus 3T with an intention to lead the market without any phone coming close. The OnePlus 3T comes with an exact same design of the OnePlus 3. It packs full metal unibody design which is simple and elegant, it also feels light and premium in hands… Expand Review

It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD Optic AMOLED display (built by Samsung) which is excellent and almost perfect so, the phone gets full marks in the display department. The OnePlus 3T, despite being a mid-range smartphone, costing only around half of what the flagship phones cost, runs on Qualcomm’s latest flagship Snapdragon 821 Processor paired with Adreno 530 GPU and 6 GB RAM. It is a beast in terms of performance, throw anything and it can handle it. It has the best processor in the world and is currently one of the most powerful Android smartphones. The OnePlus 3T features a 16 MP rear camera with Sony’s IMX298 sensor with 1.12 µm pixel size and f/2.0 aperture, it also comes with OIS & EIS. The camera has got good balance of everything and it can capture some really good quality images. It can also record 4K videos at 30fps. The front camera has been upgraded to 16 MP in the OnePlus 3T from the 8 MP front camera in the OnePlus 3. It comes with Samsung’s 3P8SP sensor with 1.0 µm pixel size, it is a pretty good selfie shooter and captures detailed selfies with accurate colors, it has also got EIS. The phone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow which will be soon upgraded to Android Nougat. The company’s Oxygen OS runs on top, it has a near stock Android UI with few enhancements, it is customisable, stable and fast. The fingerprint scanner situated below the screen is ultra fast and accurate and works even when the screen is sleeping. In the OnePlus 3T, the battery capacity has been increased to 3,400 mAh, it gives good battery backup but more importantly, it comes with Dash Charging (OnePlus’s fast charging technology) support which charges the phone from 0% to 60% in under 30 minutes without overheating the phone, which is just amazing and is probably the fastest in the world. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It comes with 64 GB internal storage but there is no microSD slot, there is also a 128 GB storage variant which is priced higher.

Alternatives: The OnePlus 3 is still available at Rs. 27,999, it’s still a great mid-budget phone.

Overall, the OnePlus 3T is a true flagship phone which delivers all the latest flagship features at almost half price when compared to the big flagship phones. It has one of the best performances in the world and it is a great complete package. It has very powerful hardware which works efficiently with its stable software, it is near perfect in almost every department. The OnePlus 3T is worth every rupee and is undoubtedly the best phone under 30000 Rs. in India at present.

2. Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017):

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy A5 (2017) which serves as a mid budget flagship phone for the company. The Galaxy A5 (2017) is one of the first Samsung phones in India to support its new revolutionary ‘Samsung Pay’, which enables you to store your card information in your phone and pay wirelessly. It works with almost all the POS machines in India and to make a payment, all you need to do is, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, use fingerprint or pin to authorise the transaction and place the phone against the POS machine and your payment is done… Expand Review

securely. Samsung Pay is really a great technology and makes life easier and the Galaxy A5 (2017) supporting Samsung Pay is one of the best thing about the phone. It comes with a very beautiful and premium looking design with nice curved glass in the front and rear blending seamlessly into the metal frame. With round edges, it is comfortable to hold. The Galaxy A5 (2017) gets full marks in the design department. It comes in a 5.2 inches screen with Full HD Super AMOLED display and has excellent quality. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with an Always On display instead of the notification LED, it consumes very less power and turns the display black and white and shows time, calendar and other important notification icons, it is a nice handy feature. It runs on Samsung’s own 1.9 GHz Octa Core Exynos 7880 processor which comes coupled with 3 GB RAM and Mali-T830 GPU. The Exynos 7880 is much like the Snapdragon 625 processor, it delivers very good performance without overheating and is battery efficient also. Apart from smooth day to day usage, heavy games and multitasking are also handled well in the Galaxy A5 (2017). It features a 16 MP f/1.9 aperture rear camera which has very good picture quality. For selfie lovers, the phone packs another 16 MP f/1.9 aperture camera in the front, which again takes beautiful and detailed selfies. Both the cameras handle low light performance well also. Both the cameras can record 1080p (Full HD) videos only, apart from 4k recording capability, OIS is also missing in the phone. The camera app also includes various filters and a Pro mode. The phone still runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow but will get the Nougat update soon. It comes with Samsung’s new Grace UX which is a lighter version of the Touchwiz UI. The Grace UX looks better and has some added features and themes support, it also has one handed mode. Another great thing about the phone is, it is IP68 Water and Dust resistant so, you can wash your phone or jump inside a swimming pool with pride and no fear at all! The phone has an accurate fingerprint scanner situated on the home button below the screen. It uses USB Type-C port for data syncing and charging. The Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with two sim slots and a separate microSD slot. It has 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 256 GB. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports Samsung’s fast charging which fully charges the phone in around 80 minutes.

Alternatives: Its bigger brother Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) comes with a bigger 5.7 inches screen and 3600 mAh battery while the other specs remain the same, you can go with it if you need a bigger phone, it costs Rs. 33,490. The newly launched Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro with 5.7 inches screen at Rs. 27,990 can also be a good alternative but it doesn’t come with water/dust resistance and Samsung Pay support. The 6 inches Galaxy A9 Pro is also available at Rs. 29,900. The old Samsung Galaxy S6 is also available under 30000 Rs.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is a great beautiful smartphone with correct balance of everything. It offers many flagship like features and there is hardly anything bad in the phone. It gives a premium and pretty balanced user experience and specially Samsung Pay makes it even greater. The only thing which goes against the phone is its price. It doesn’t use a top of the line processor and still costs on the higher side while its competitors offer much more at the same price. But still, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) offers many reason to go for it.

3. Apple iPhone 6 (32 GB):

The iPhone 6 is Apple’s 2 generations old smartphone which was launched in 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB storage options, out of which the 16 GB variant was available around 30000 Rs. for quite some time now but, we never recommended going for the 16 GB variant as it is very low storage and despite having a good phone, you could never use it to the fullest because of running out of space most of the times. But now, Apple has released a new 32 GB variant of the iPhone 6, keeping everything else the same. So the big question is, how good the iPhone 6 is in the lot of some great and powerful Android smartphones? Let’s find out… Expand Review

First and the most important thing one must remember to understand the iPhones is that, they will never blow away your mind with the spec sheet but are equally capable of handling everything so, we can’t just start comparing this phone with the Android phones out there, iPhones are all about excellent user experience with quality hardware/ software and attention to minute details. The iPhone 6 comes in a beautiful metal unibody design which is extremely well-built and sturdy, at 6.9 mm it is thin and comfortable however, it is slippery also. It weighs at just 129 grams. It comes in a 4.7 inches Retina HD (750 x 1334 pixels) display with 326 ppi pixel density and has very good quality, although it is not a Full HD display but it is good. The iPhone 6 runs on the 1.4 GHz Dual Core Apple A8 processor coupled with 1 GB RAM and PowerVR GX6450 GPU, you must be thinking that a Dual core processor and only 1 GB RAM in 2017? Yes, that sounds terribly low but the performance is good, it scores 59,947 in Antutu benchmark v6.2 and can still beat many of the Octa core, 3/4 GB RAM Android phones. This is possible due to Apple’s tight integration between hardware and the iOS which, because of its fundamental structure and working, needs much lower RAM to function smoothly, you can understand this from Apple’s newest iPhone 7 which still has only 2 GB RAM and a Quad core processor and has one of the best performances in the world. So apart from numbers, the phone runs very smoothly and doesn’t slows down with time, it can also handle heavy gaming very well. Coming to another strength of the phone, its 8 MP rear camera, again don’t go by the numbers, it is excellent and clicks great photos. When it comes to the front, it has got a 1.2 MP selfie shooter, which again is not as bad as it might sound but honestly, at this price there are much better selfie centric phones so, it’s not for selfie lovers however, if you click selfies occasionally, then it will do the job, it clicks decent/acceptable selfies. Above all these, the best part of the phone is the software which powers it. It runs on Apple’s latest iOS 10.3 which is a great mobile operating system, if you are an iPhone user you know what it is and if you are an Android (it is a great mobile operating system as well) user, you will find it completely different and exciting to use. The iOS 10.3 is very user friendly, there is Siri, Widgets, Notification centre, Control centre and more. You also get some great apps by Apple and some popular iOS exclusive apps as well. The whole experience with the iOS 10.3 and even the UI is very beautiful. You also get a fingerprint scanner situated in the home button below the screen, called as Touch ID. Apart from unlocking the phone, it can be used to authorise purchases from the App store or payments via Apple Pay (not available in India) and is also integrated into many third party apps for security. The audio via speakers and the headphones is rich and loud. Sadly, it is a single sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. The 32 GB onboard storage is not expandable. The iPhone 6 is backed by a non-removable 1810 mAh battery which delivers around a day’s battery backup with moderate usage.

Alternatives: Apple’s iPhone SE (64 GB) is also available at 27,999 Rs. It is a very good and much more powerful phone than the iPhone 6 but has only 4 inches screen and is not recommended to go with unless you have used a 4 inches phone before and want to stick with that size only.

Overall, the iPhone 6 is a great phone. It is beautiful premium compact smartphone with good performance and excellent rear camera and delivers a great unmatched user experience with its beautiful user friendly software plus, it also carries the brand value of Apple which gives an unbeatable feeling as well. All in all, a great device with good value for money. And for users looking for a premium compact smartphone, the iPhone 6 is the best phone under 30000 Rs.

4. ZTE Nubia Z11:

ZTE has launched its most powerful smartphone Nubia Z11 in India recently. The Nubia Z11 looks like a really promising device, let’s get started with it design. It comes in a really premium metal unibody design in black and gold colors, the back of the phone feels very good to touch and hold and on the front, it has got a 2.5D curved corning gorilla glass. However, the biggest highlight, rather say achievement in the design of the Nubia Z11 is the bezel less display which looks absolutely amazing and adds a lot to the aesthetics of the phone… Expand Review

It also helps in making the phone more compact by reducing the screen to body ratio. So, in the design department, the ZTE Nubia Z11 is absolutely good, it has got one of the best designs for the price and is an eye catcher the moment you pull it out from the pocket. Coming to the display, it has got a 5.5 inches Full HD screen which has awesome display quality and thanks to the bezel less display, the screen looks more beautiful. It runs on the 2.15 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with 6 GB RAM and delivers great performance like the OnePlus 3T. Games, multimedia, multitasking, everything is smooth here. When it comes to the optics, the ZTE Nubia Z11 packs the same sensor like the OnePlus 3T, Xiaomi Mi5 and the Zenfone 3 which is the Sony IMX 298 with f/2.0 aperture. It comes with OIS and clicks really good images with good depth, colors and saturation, the quality is good in both day light and low light conditions. It misses out on 4K video recording and offers video recording upto 2K resolution. The 8 MP front camera also has decent quality but it could have been a little better, still it’s not a big turn off, it does an acceptable job. The screen flash for the front camera is good. ZTE’s camera app is feature packed and includes lots of modes and features. The phone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with no words on if and when the Nougat update is coming. The Nubia UI 4.0 runs on top, it takes full benefit of the bezel less display and offers lots of features like double click on the edge to go back, swipe up/down from the edge to switch or start apps, swipe repeatedly from the edge to free up RAM, swipe from both edges to adjust brightness and more. These features are cool and actually come handy specially, double tap on the edge to go back, it reduces your thumb’s movement while using the phone with one hand. The Nubia UI also offers another handy feature – swiping up from bottom of the screen split’s the screen into two, it is very useful for multitasking. It packs a good fingerprint scanner on the back, it can also be used for lots of other activities, it also packs IR blaster. The Nubia Z11 is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery, which gives a day’s battery backup for moderate to heavy usage. It supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology which is really very fast and one of the best. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support, it packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 200 GB but has a hybrid slot.

Overall, the ZTE Nubia Z11 is a great complete smartphone with one of the best designs, great performance, excellent camera and all the required features. It offers a great value and user experience for its price and it’s one of the best mid-range phones. However, when it comes to the brand value, ZTE still falls behind its competitors like OnePlus, Asus and Huawei Honor which also offer excellent phones at the same price but, the Nubia Z11 still manages to take a lead from few of them based on its excellent offerings.

5. Asus ZenFone 3 ZE552KL:

The Zenfone 2 series of Asus was a good hit in India and recently, Asus has launched its much awaited Zenfone 3 series of smartphones. When compared to the Zenfone 2, the Zenfone 3 comes with great improvements in the design department, both in terms of looks and build quality. It comes with a metal body and a 2.5D curved glass on the front and back, the metallic edges on the side are also rounded, which makes the phone very comfortable to hold. The back panel has concentric circle design, which gives a good glossy reflection… Expand Review

when brought under light. It weighs at 155 grams and has a thickness of 7.7mm. Summing up the design, the Zenfone 3 packs excellent looks, great premium build quality and a comfortable to use design. It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD display which has a very good display quality. It has 600nits brightness which means the visibility under outdoor conditions or direct sunlight is good. The Zenfone 3 ZE552KL is powered by the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor designed with the 14nm process, which is advanced technology designed to improve performance, use lesser power and save battery. It is coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 4 GB RAM and delivers excellent performance for every usage. Although, at this price the Snapdragon 820 processor was expected but still the Snapdragon 625 is also very good, obviously we cannot compare it with the Snapdragon 820 but still it will not disappoint you for heavy usage also. Coming to the camera, the Zenfone 3 packs a 16 MP rear camera with Sony’s latest IMX298 sensor (also used in OnePlus 3T and Xiaomi Mi5), f/2.0 aperture, 4-axis OIS, 3-axis EIS, dual-LED flash and supports 4K video recording. Asus has also introduced TriTech AF which combines laser, phase detection and continuous auto-focus, which results in really fast auto-focus. It can capture really good quality images and gets full marks. The camera lens is also protected with Sapphire Glass. The 8 MP front camera is also very good. Also, Asus’s camera app is also very feature rich, it has lots of filters and modes and also includes a complete manual mode which lets you adjust the camera’s raw settings the way you want. The phone runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Asus’s ZenUI 3.0 running on top. The ZenUI comes with lots of added features and customizations. It has good speakers and a good fingerprint scanner situated at the back. It uses USB Type-C 2.0 for fast data syncing and charging. It is a dual sim phone with 4G support on both the slots. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 2 TB with a microSD card, using a hybrid slot. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which delivers acceptable battery backup but a bigger battery would have made the phone much better.

Alternatives: Asus has also launched a more compact Zenfone 3 ZE520KL with 5.2 inches screen and reduced specs, you can go with it if you need a more comfortable phone.

Overall, the Asus Zenfone 3 ZE552KL is a great phone, it packs great design, good performance, excellent cameras and all the latest features and delivers a true flagship like experience. However, when compared with what other phones like the OnePlus 3T are offering around the same price, it feels a bit overpriced but remember, it is not a bad phone at all.
