Best Smartphone under 10000 Rs. since Feb-17

1. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (3 GB RAM):

Xiaomi has launched the new Redmi Note 4 which is the successor to its massively popular Redmi Note 3 which is the no. 1 best selling online smartphone in India so, the Redmi Note 4 has very big shoes to fill in, let’s see what all it has got. Starting with the design, it is built on a similar design language like the Redmi Note 3 with few differences like a 2.5D curved glass on front and a better back. The excellent build quality is one of the best at its price, it also feels nice and premium in hands… Expand Review

The Redmi Note 4 comes with a 5.5 inches Full HD screen with good display quality. Sadly, it misses out on Gorilla Glass screen protection. It runs on the 2.0 GHz Octa Core Snapdragon 625 Processor and comes in 2/3/4 GB RAM variants with Adreno 506 GPU. It obviously doesn’t deliver performance like the Snapdragon 650 on the Redmi Note 3 but it is still pretty much capable of handling everything smoothly, it also handles games well without much heating. On the camera front, it packs a 13 MP rear camera which is a better shooter than the 16 MP rear camera of the Redmi Note 3, it has good picture quality with good colors and details. The 5 MP front camera is also good, it comes with various beautification modes which enhance the selfies. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Xiaomi’s MIUI 8.0 running on top, the company has promised the Nougat update in the coming few weeks. The MIUI 8.0 is a beautiful ROM with lots of customisations, it also offers lots of useful features like Dual Apps (two accounts of apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, etc.), Second Space (creates a new partition in the phone which is protected with password/fingerprint and can be used to install completely different sets of apps and also has a separate gallery, basically first space and second space behave like two different phones), although many manufacturers provide features like second space but in Xiaomi’s MIUI it is perfectly executed, it’s fast and easy to access, the MIUI also offers quick ball. In our opinion, among all the ROMs from different Android manufacturers the MIUI is the most feature rich and by far the best ROM out there, it adds a lot of value to the phone. The phone packs a good fingerprint scanner and also includes Infrared Blaster which allows you to control your TV, AC, music system and many other electronic appliances, it is a very good feature and comes handy. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 128 GB via a hybrid slot. Coming to another good thing about the phone, it is backed by a 4100 mAh battery which delivers excellent battery backup. Disappointingly, the Redmi Note 4 misses out on fast charging which few other competitors offer at this price, it is not a deal breaker but it would have made things sweeter.

Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is a great budget smartphone. It has almost perfect balance of everything, be it design, performance, camera, software or battery life it delivers a very satisfactory experience. So, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (3GB RAM) with its great user experience is the best phone under 10000 Rs. in India.

Newly Launched

2. Moto E4 Plus:

Motorola, has for the first time launched an attractive feature boasting smartphone in its Moto E series lineup – the Moto E4 Plus, which comes with a massive 5,000 mAh battery. The phone delivers excellent battery backup and runs easily for 2 days for most of the users. It also supports 10W rapid charging. Coming to its design, the Moto E4 Plus comes with a metallic body with a 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top, the back has a typical Motorola circular camera unit. The overall design is very similar to the Moto G5 Plus and the build quality is also good… Expand Review

However, it is a bit bulky with 198 grams of weight and 9.55 mm of thickness, and although Lenovo has managed a lighter weight with even bigger battery in its Lenovo P2 but, it is totally justified as the E4 Plus is a more affordable phone. It comes with a 5.5 inches HD display, at this price most of the phones offer a full HD display and here the Moto E4 Plus surely lags. The screen comes with oleophobic coating which reduces the fingerprints and smudges. The phone is powered by the 1.3 GHz quad core MediaTek MT6737 processor paired with 3 GB RAM and Mali-T720 GPU. This processor is obviously not a very good choice from Motorola, it delivers average performance and lags while multitasking and gaming, however it smoothly handles day to day usage, apps and browsing. The Moto E4 Plus runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Stock Android UI and will also get future Android update, which is the highlight of Moto phones. Motorola has just added few gestures and actions like twist the phone to open camera, chop twice to turn on flashlight, etc. which are few helpful additions to Stock Android. It comes with Moto Display instead of a notification LED and shows time and important notifications when the screen is locked. It packs a 13 MP ƒ/2.0 aperture rear camera which can capture only 720p video recording. The picture quality is decent with some noise in low light clicks. On the front, there is a 5 MP camera with ƒ/2.4 aperture lens and a good thing is, it also comes with front LED flash for low light selfies. The front camera quality is also decent. The camera app also comes with a PRO mode and easy to use UI. It packs a fast fingerprint scanner on the home button, which can also perform ‘home’, ‘back’ and ‘recent apps’ actions by using tap, gestures and you can disable the on-screen navigation buttons. It comes with Dolby Atmos support and has good audio quality. The Moto E4 Plus is a dual sim phone and thankfully with dedicated slots, it also support 4G and VoLTE. It comes with 32 GB of onboard storage, which is expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card.

Overall, the Moto E4 Plus is good budget smartphone with a great battery backup, excellent pure software, good design and decent cameras. However, it is not a very powerful phone and is not suitable for heavy users. But if you don’t have heavy usage, the Moto E4 Plus offers a very good package with huge battery and its popular stock Android and delivers a pretty good user experience. Can be a very good choice under 10000 Rs.

3. Coolpad Cool1 Dual (3 GB RAM):

Last year, LeEco became the largest shareholder of Coolpad and both the Chinese companies decided to launch new smartphones under the new “Cool” branding, apart from launching smartphones in their own brandings. The Coolpad Cool1 Dual is the first smartphone in the Cool series, let’s get into the details of the phone. Starting with the design, the Cool1 packs excellent metallic body and looks similar to the LeEco Le 2 or even more similar to the LeEco Le 1S Eco except, the rear camera unit is placed in center on top… Expand Review

The phone looks beautiful and feels sturdy and premium. It comes with a 5.5 inches Full HD IPS display which has good quality, although the large black bezels around the display are annoying. On the performance front, it runs on the very powerful 1.8 GHz Snapdragon 652 processor coupled with 3 GB RAM and Adreno 510 GPU and delivers great performance, which is one of the best at this price. It can handle heavy gaming and multitasking well. However, the biggest highlight of the Cool1 is, it packs in two 13 MP rear cameras, one captures the usual coloured photos while the other one captures monochromatic (black & white) photos. When you click a picture, both the cameras work simultaneously and produce a single image with added details and depth. The picture quality is very good in good lighting conditions however, there is a little noise in low light conditions but, it is acceptable at this price. A great benefit of the dual camera setup is, it allows Bokeh effect (background blurred) like DSLRs, it doesn’t work perfectly well all the times but the images come great when you manage to apply it properly. You can also change the focus point of the image after it is clicked. It also allows you to click artistic black and white images and also supports 4K video recording; the camera app is also good. The 8 MP front camera is also a decent shooter, it comes with the face beautification feature. Summing up the camera, the Cool1 packs good cameras for its price, the added Bokeh effect is a really nice thing to have. The phone runs on LeEco’s EUI 5.6 based on Android v6.0 Marshmallow. The EUI is good; it is fast, efficient and customisable. The fingerprint scanner on the back is fast. The phone includes IR Blaster and Remote app which lets you control your TV, Set top box, AC, Music System, etc. with your phone, it is a very handy feature and very few phones support it. It is a Dual Sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. The Cool1 comes with 32 GB of internal storage but sadly it is not expandable, this is the biggest downside in the phone. The phone is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery which delivers excellent battery backup. It also supports Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging via USB Type-C port which charges the phone 50% in 30 mins, claims the company. Despite there is LeEco’s involvement in the phone, it doesn’t come with its Supertainment package which allows premium subscription to many Indian media publishers free for a year.

Overall, the Coolpad Cool1 Dual is a very good feature rich smartphone with excellent performance, design and battery life and offers good Dual rear cameras which provide some cool extra features. A very good buy at this price.

More phones from Coolpad/LeEco:

The popular LeEco Le 1s Eco is also available at Rs. 9,999 but the Coolpad Cool1 Dual comes with almost the same design of the Le 1s Eco and both the devices run on LeEco’s EUI, moreover the Cool1 Dual offers better processor, camera, battery and features. It only lacks the one year free Supertainment package which comes with the Le 1s Eco but apart from that, the Coolpad Cool1 Dual offers a much better deal than the LeEco Le 1s Eco.

4. Lenovo Vibe K5 Note (3/32 GB):

Lenovo has launched its much awaited phone, the Vibe K5 Note in India. The Indian version of the K5 Note comes with bumped up specs than its Chinese counterpart. And, the Vibe K5 Note is the better specked smartphone than its two predecessors, the K4 Note and K3 Note which were a great hit. So, let’s see what the Vibe K5 Note packs. Starting with the design, the Vibe K5 Note is the first phone in the ‘Kx Note’ series to sport a full metal design. It has got a nice symmetrical design, which looks beautiful and feels premium… Expand Review

, its curvy edges on the back also makes it comfortable to hold in hands. The phone weighs 165 grams and has a thickness of 8.49 mm and doesn’t feel bulky. It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD display which has very good display quality, good viewing angles, good colors and good brightness. The phone runs on 1.8 GHz Octa Core Mediatek 6755 Processor, which is a decent performer but much better processors are available at this price, though normal users will not find any difficulties but heavy gamers should stay away from it. The phone comes with 3 GB and 4 GB RAM options. The Vibe K5 Note features a 13 MP rear camera with PDAF and is a good shooter, the pictures have good saturation and depth and the pictures come accurate but, the shutter speed is a little slow. Summing up the rear camera quality, it has good camera but again better camera phones are available at this price. The 8 MP front camera clicks good selfies, it comes with beautification mode and the selfies turn out good. There are two special software features which you only get in a Lenovo phone, TheatreMax and Secure Zone. TheatreMax is Lenovo’s Virtual Reality technology, it basically splits your phone’s screen into two parts for viewing with a VR headset so, with it, you can not only enjoy any video whether it is designed for VR or not but can also play games in the VR mode. Lenovo has also launched the new ANT VR headset and has also launched a remote controller for it so, you can operate the phone while wearing it in the headset. The TheatreMax technology is a really nice addition and multimedia users will truly love it. About Secure Zone, Lenovo’s phones have two zones – Open zone and Secure Zone, where both the zones operate independently from each other, which means you can run the two zones as two separate phones and can install two Whatsapp, two Facebook or any other apps. The phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Lenovo’s Vibe UI running on top, this time, Lenovo has optimized the Vibe UI even more and has made it leaner. The fingerprint scanner is fast and accurate. It is a dual sim phone with 4G support on both the slots. For storage, it packs 32 GB of internal memory which is expandable up to 128 GB but, has a hybrid slot. It packs a Non-removable 3500 mAh battery which gives a good battery backup.

Overall, the Lenovo Vibe K5 Note comes with a good design, good cameras, decent performance (though not enough for heavy gaming) and a good complete package but, it is the multimedia experience for which the phone stands out. So, if you have more multimedia consumption or want to enjoy the VR experience in your day to day life, the Vibe K5 Note can be a very good fit for you.

5. Xiaomi Redmi 4 (3/32 GB):

After the massive success of the Redmi 3s and 3s Prime smartphones, Xiaomi has launched their successor – the Redmi 4, which comes with many advancements. The new Redmi 4 has became super hit right from its first flash sale where 250,000 units were sold in under 8 minutes. But what makes this phone so popular? Let’s find out. Xiaomi has been gradually improving the look and feel of its devices in the Redmi series and with the Redmi 4, they have done amazing job with its design and build quality… Expand Review

The phone comes with a full metal unibody design with a 2.5D curved glass on the front. The phone from nowhere feels like a budget phone but instead feels very premium and high quality for its price. It comes with a 5-inches HD display which has decent quality, still a Full HD display would have made the phone perfect. The Redmi 4 runs on a 1.4 GHz octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor coupled with 2/3/4 GB RAM and Adreno 505 GPU. The performance is good and it handles daily usage and multitasking smoothly. It can also handle games but is not meant for heavy gaming. A great thing in the phone is its huge 4,100 mAh non-removable battery which gives a very good battery backup, Xiaomi has done a commendable job in packing a massive battery in just a 5 inches phone without increasing the phone’s thickness or weight. A bigger battery automatically makes your phone a better device as it reduces your pain to charge it in frequent intervals and also reduces FOSO (Fear of Switching Off)! The Redmi 4 comes with a 13 MP rear camera with ƒ/2.0 aperture, the picture quality is much improved and the picture quality is pretty good for its price. The 5 MP ƒ/2.2 aperture front camera is also good, Xiaomi has also added real time face filters which makes selfies more fun. The phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow but also includes Android 7.0 Nougat Preview (beta) out of the box so, early birds can also enjoy Nougat before its public version is rolled out. Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 runs on top, although it is resource intensive and heavily customised, it is the best Android ROM from a phone manufacturer, not only it has a lot of useful features like Second space, Dual apps, etc. (more details about the MIUI 8 here) but, it also has a very large user base and a big online community. The phone packs a very accurate fingerprint scanner on the back and also includes an IR blaster with an inbuilt remote app which lets you control TV, AC, and a lot of devices from your mobile itself. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE and it comes in three storage variants 16/32/64 GB, all of which are expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card but use a hybrid slot so you won’t be able to use dual sim and microSD card simultaneously.

Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a great 5 inches budget smartphone. It is a beautiful phone with balanced hardware, good and latest software and ticks almost all the boxes right and can be picked up with closed eyes if you want a little compact phone. And out of the three variants, the 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage variant is the most balanced. The Redmi 4 is the best phone under 10000 Rs. with a 5 inches screen.

Best Tech Guru Recommendations
For buying a smartphone under 10000 Rs. in August 2017

  • If you want a great phone, go with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 without much thoughts. It is the best phone with all round features. However, if for any reasons you don't want to go with it, go with the Moto G4 Plus, it has better cameras (most probably the best under 10000 Rs.) and stock Android.

  • If you want a camera centric smartphone, the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual can be a good choice with its dual rear camera setup.

  • If you have more multimedia consumption and want to enjoy VR experience, go with the Lenovo K5 Note.

  • If you want a little compact phone, go with the 5-inches Xiaomi Redmi 4, the Lenovo K6 Power or the Nokia 3. The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is the best out of the three.

  • Nokia phones have made their re-entry and the Nokia 3 is available under 10000 Rs. We recommend not to go with it just because of the nostalgia but also understand its offerings completely. It doesn't offer you everything so, go with it only if it meets your requirements completely otherwise, the Redmi 4 will be always better.

  • The new Yu Yureka Black is gaining popularity but it is not the phone to pick over Redmi 4 and Lenovo K6 Power.
