2. Xiaomi Mi A1:

Few years ago, Google introduced Android One which was a good concept but unfortunately did not do quite well. But now, Xiaomi has launched its first ever Android One smartphone in partnership with Google and as expected from Xiaomi, it is a feature rich smartphone with great promising hardware and software. Two of the biggest highlights of the Mi A1 are, it being an Android One smartphone and its dual rear camera setup at the back. As it is an Android One smartphone, powered by Google, it runs on the pure stock Android 7.1.2 Nougat with Android 8 Oreo update promised in 2017, the good things does not end here, it will also be one of the first… Expand Review

phones in the world to get the Android ‘P’ update when it is launched in later half of 2018. It includes all the popular Google services, Google Assistant and offers free unlimited high quality photo backups in the Google Photos app,  which is the default gallery app. The UI is absolutely clean with no bloatware and retains just 3 of Xiaomi’s apps – Camera app, Remote (for IR blaster) and MI Store app. Now, coming to the very important dual rear cameras, it packs two 12 MP sensors on the back, out of which one is a wide-angle lens with 1.25μm pixel size, f/2.2 aperture and the other is the telephoto lens (usually seen in high end devices). It offers 2x optical zoom, PDAF, dual-LED flash and 4K video recording. The picture quality is just amazing and in the Portrait mode, it clicks wonderful pictures with DSLR like bokeh effects, which looks real and sharp focus on the subject. The company claims that its dual cameras are better than that of the iPhone 7 Plus and the OnePlus 5, while it may not be entirely true but one thing is for sure, the cameras are great and can certainly go neck to neck with all the flagship smartphones in terms of the portrait mode, and especially at this price, they are absolutely the best. However, under low/artificial light, there can be some visible grains but, no complaints at its price tag. The Mi A1 packs a 5 MP f/2 aperture front camera with Beautify 3.0 and also clicks good selfies. Coming to the design, it comes in a slim metal unibody which is well built and premium. The antenna lines nicely stick to the edges like the iPhone 7 and the phone looks very beautiful. With rounded edges on the back, it is comfortable to hold, also it comes with a fingerprint resistant coating on the back. It sports a 5.5 inches full HD display which has good quality and nice viewing angles, it comes with 450 nits brightness. It runs on the popular, powerful and reliable 2.0 GHz octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 4 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU. The performance of this processor is tested and widely approved for its efficiency. It handles heavy games, multitasking and day to day usage smoothly. Thanks to the processor, the phone doesn’t heat much and for additional heat management, it comes with two pyrolytic graphite sheets. It includes a fast fingerprint scanner on the back, an Infrared blaster to let you control electronic devices like Tv, A.C, etc., and USB Type-C. For music lovers, it comes with 10V smart power amplifier and provides rich audio quality via the headphones. It is a dual sim phone with 4G, VoLTE support and comes with 64 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded upto 128 GB via microSD, using hybrid slot. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3080 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and comes with a 5V / 2A charger.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is a redefining smartphone. It packs dual rear cameras with optical zoom and great picture quality like the high end smartphones. It also comes with latest & stock Android, good and powerful performance, beautiful premium design and many other features. It is a great complete package and offers pretty much for its price and can easily be the top pick at this price. And if the rear cameras are most important for you, you should pick it over the Moto G5S Plus.

3. Honor 7X:

Honor has just launched the new Honor 7X, successor of its popular budget smartphone Honor 6X. This time, the company has taken efforts to provide latest and trending features in its warrior in the Rs. 15000 segment which includes some excellent phones and has tried to make it a really strong contender. Starting with its design, the Honor 7X looks very similar to the also recently launched Honor 9i, with just few differences like the camera placement on the back. gives a good feel when you hold the phone. One of the highlight of the phone is its big 5.93 inches Full HD display with 18:9 aspect ratio, which has become a new trend for smartphones. The display quality is good with nice viewing angles. The tall display is fitted in a narrow bezel body with small bezels on the top and bottom, due to which the big screen is accommodated in the size of a typical 5.5 inches phone. On the performance front, the Honor 7X is powered by the 2.36 GHz Octa Core HiSilicon Kirin 659 processor from Huawei, coupled with 4 GB RAM and Mali-T830 MP2 GPU. The processor handles normal day to day operations and multitasking well but lags a little with heavy games. Another strong aspect of the Honor 7X is its dual camera setup on the back, which includes a 16 MP primary sensor and another 2 MP sensor for capturing additional depth. It captures very good quality images with nice colors, good details and sharpness. The camera app comes with lots of modes, filters and features including a portrait mode and full pro mode. On the front there is an 8 MP selfie shooter which captures decent quality selfies. The Honor 7X runs on Android 7.0 Nougat based EMUI 5.1, which is a heavily customised skin from Huawei. It comes with lots of themes, lock screen wallpapers, lots of customisations, features and options to enhance the UX. The fingerprint scanner on the back is very fast and responsive. It is a dual sim phone with 4G support but it comes with hybrid slot. It comes in two internal storage variants of 32 GB and 64 GB, both are expandable up to 256 GB using microSD card. The Honor 7X is backed by a non-removable 3340 mAh Li-Ion battery which provides good battery backup and runs your phone for a day for most of the not so heavy users. Disappointingly, it doesn’t support fast charging, which is one of the very important feature.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Honor 7X is a well balanced smartphone offering almost everything we can expect at this price. More importantly, it has one stand out feature of narrow bezel design with big screen and 18:9 display, which is complemented well with good performance, cameras, design and software. So, it is the first smartphone under 15000 Rs. with 18:9 display and some serious hardware. Can be a great buying choice, specially if you are looking for that tall display, it is the best option at this price.

4. Lenovo K8 Note:

Lenovo has skipped the K7 Note and has launched directly the K8 Note (after the K6 Note) as it believes it has added features to the new smartphone which are one generation ahead, compared to the competition. Let’s see how true it is and how well the Lenovo K8 Note puts itself against some of the most popular smartphones in the budget segment. Starting with the design, the K8 Note packs a metal unibody design made up of series 6000 aluminium and feels premium, it has also got a 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the front. Looks wise, it has similar design like most of the metal unibody smartphones out there but it still looks good… Expand Review

It sports a 5.5 inches full HD display which has very good display quality. When it comes to performance, the K8 Note packs a some big numbers. It is powered by the new 2.3 GHz Deca-core Mediatek Helio X23 processor paired with 3/4 GB RAM and Mali-T880 MP4 GPU. When it comes to actual performance, we all know Qualcomm processors are much more efficient and reliable however, the Helio X23 is also powerful processor and manages to handle day to usage and multitasking smoothly. It also plays games well however, there can be some very minimal lags for the heaviest games but they are still very much playable, also the temperatures remain under control while gaming. Another department where the K8 Note shines is the camera. It packs a dual rear camera setup on the back which includes one 13 MP and one 5 MP camera, both the cameras work simultaneously to click beautiful pictures, the 13 MP camera captures the subject while the 5 MP camera captures additional details and depth and produces bokeh effect. It comes with depth effect which provides lots of options and allows you to cut out the subject and change the background. The picture quality is very good with accurate colors and high depth of field, it goes neck to neck with the Moto G5 Plus in terms of picture quality and even gets an upper hand at times. In low light conditions also, it manages to click good images but there can be some noise at times. On the front, there is a 13 MP camera which also comes with LED flash and clicks beautiful good quality selfies. The phone runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Marshmallow and the good thing here is, with the K8 Note, Lenovo has decided to get rid of its customised Vibe UI and will use Stock Android for all its smartphones starting with the K8 Note. This will ensure a better user experience and probably faster Android updates like its Motorola smartphones. The phone packs a fast fingerprint scanner on the back, it also comes with Dolby Atmos support for better audio experience and also supports Lenovo’s TheatreMax, which provides great VR and 360 degree video experience by allowing you to view your normal videos in VR mode. It also comes with a dedicated music key which allows you to play, pause or change songs without even opening the lock or taking the phone out of pocket. A great thing is that, the music key is completely customisable and can be set to open any application like camera, clock, maps, etc. if you don’t want to use it for music. The phone also comes with water repellent nano coating for additional protection. It comes with dual sim and 4G, VoLTE support. It comes in two storage variants – 32 GB and 64 GB, both of which are expandable up to 128 GB and thankfully uses a dedicated slot for the microSD card and the two sim cards. The phone packs a big 4000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and comes with fast charging support. One area where the company could have added some more efforts is weight management. The K8 Note with 4000 mAh battery weighs at 180 grams however, company’s own Lenovo P2 with 5100 mAh battery weighs 177 grams. Although it is still manageable and not a turn off.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Lenovo K8 Note is a really feature packed smartphone. Be it the excellent dual rear cameras, front camera, performance, multimedia capabilities, stock Android, big battery or all the other features, it ticks all the boxes right and offers everything one can expect from a budget smartphone. It truly delivers a wonderful experience and is currently one of the best phones under 15000 Rs. and if you value multimedia more, it should definitely be your preferred choice under 15000 Rs.

may not be comfortable in holding and handling this big phone but, a bigger screen is always a treat, giving you more space for your content. It has also got a 2.5D curved glass on top. A highlight of the phone is, it comes with ‘Samsung Pay Mini’ which is a light version of Samsung Pay, it has fewer hardware requirements, comes with lesser features but is still a very good addition rather, a good capability to have in your phone. It runs on the 2.39 GHz octa core MediaTek Helio P25 processor, coupled with 4 GB of RAM. It delivers good performance and handles games smoothly, without overheating. Although serious gamers should opt for the more powerful phones with Snapdragon processors. Another highlight of the Galaxy On Max is its cameras, it packs a 13 MP f/1.7 aperture rear camera and a 13 MP f/1.9 front camera, having LED flash on both front and back. The picture quality of both the cameras is very impressive. The low light pictures also come out good, with low noise levels and good details. The camera app also includes ‘Social Camera’ which packs lots of features like ‘Instant Share’ which lets you share the picture with different social/messaging apps and marked contacts in WhatsApp, it also includes ‘Instant Edit’ which lets you add stickers and effects and you can share it instantly. The camera app also includes various live stickers and live filters and provides great fun options for selfie lovers. On the software front, Samsung has adopted the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with its new UX running on top. It comes with less bloatware and is a lighter version of the Touchwiz UI, it also looks better and has some added features and themes support. It features a fast fingerprint scanner embedded on the home button. It supports dual sim with dedicated slots and supports 4G and VoLTE. The Galaxy On Max comes with 32 GB of onboard storage which is expandable up to 256 GB via microSD card. It is powered by a non-removable 3300 mAh battery which gives good battery backup but sadly, it doesn’t come with fast charging support.

    1. Screen size of Redmi Note 4 is 5.5 in. It is convenient to watch movies and play games. If you want, you can wait for Moto G5S Plus. However, Moto has not been able to maintain it’s quality and I have a Moto G4 Plus which suffers from ghost touch. Service center refuses to repair saying that no Mobile Phone should be used while it is charging. Idiots…

  4. Purchased 2 moto g4 plus . First in May 2016 and Second in January 2017. Both suddenly stop and hang. Didn’t expected from a first ranked smartphone. Tell me what to do. Why this website rank it 1st when it have such problems?

  16. Hi Rahul,
I have been using moto g 2nd gen since its launch. There has been minor problems. Now I want a 4G supported phone, I guess MOTO G5 plus could be a good option. But the 3000mAh battery is not much appreciable. Now Honor 6X and Lenovo P2 seem quite interesting too.

So, will you suggest me the best among three with their cons and pros?

    1. Hi, because of the battery efficient Snapdragon 625 processor the Moto G5 Plus delivers good battery backup. But if you need a serious battery backup, the Lenovo P2 can be a great choice.

      1. Hey Rahul

  18. Hi Rahul,

Confused between moto g5 plus(32 gb) and redmi note 4(64 gb). Specifications wise redmi note 4 beats moto g5 plus in most of the departments along with price (4k less) but moto comes with brand name and I think build quality will be better as compared to note 4. Please guide. Really confused.

  19. HI Rahul want to know which phone I should buy? moto g4 plus or g5 plus.buget is 15k and g5 plus 16gb is not available so what I do tell me please

    1. Hi, go with the Moto G5 Plus only. You can wait for few days for the 16 GB variant to become available or else go with the 32 GB variant, spending 2k more is not a bad investment for bigger RAM and storage.

  20. Which phone should I choose moto g 4 plus or redmi note 4 ?? Or should I wait for moto g 5 plus. Looking for good camera quality!
