Newly launched Best Smartphone under 20000 Rs. since Oct-17

1. Honor 9i:

After introducing it with a different name in China, Huawei has launched its much anticipated phone Honor 9i in India. The Honor 9i packs some remarkable features, it is the first phone in India to come with four cameras, it also comes with very narrow bezel 18:9 display. It shows us a glimpse of where the competition will be heading to in the future of budget smartphones. The Honor 9i comes in a premium metallic unibody design, it is very well built and comfortable to hold with its rounded edges. It comes with very less bezels and due to which it accommodates a huge 5.9 inches screen in the size of a typical 5.5 inches phone, which is a great thing!… Expand Review

Despite the big screen and metal body it manages to keep the weight at 164 grams. It comes with the FullView FHD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2160 x 1080 pixels resolution with 407 ppi pixel density, the 18:9 aspect ratio is the new trend and is the feature which is usually seen in premium flagship phones, with only few phones being able to implement it in the budget segment. The display quality is good, you will enjoy your apps, games and media on a long screen. Coming to the quad cameras on the Honor 9i, it features dual camera setup both on the front and back. On the rear, there is a 16 MP primary sensor along with a 2 MP sensor and on the front, there is a 13 MP primary sensor again with a 2 MP sensor. The secondary 2 MP senors on the front and back are used to capture depth information and for portrait mode. The picture quality of the rear camera is very good, it captures images with natural colors and good details, even the low light images also come out good. The front camera is again very good, it captures excellent selfies. It also comes with soft LED flash on the front. The portrait shots using the secondary cameras comes out good, it very well blurs the background but has some issues in identifying the edges. It can record 1080p videos from both the front and rear cameras. The camera app comes with beautification mode and lots of other modes, filters and settings. The Honor 9i is powered by the 2.36 GHz octa core Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 659 processor paired with 4 GB RAM. The performance is well enough for day to day operations and multitasking but, it lags with heavy games. So, heavy gamers should give it a miss. The phone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat based company’s EMUI 5.1, it is feature rich and provides lots of gestures and options like a private second partition which is totally separate from the primary partition, and can be accessed directly from the dedicated fingerprint. The fingerprint scanner on the back should have been more towards the centre to make it easily accessible however, it is very fast and accurate. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It comes with 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card but, uses a hybrid slot. It is backed by a non-removable 3340 mAh battery which delivers decent battery backup but, it could become even better with some optimisations. Sadly, it doesn’t support fast charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Honor 9i is a unique smartphone offering some big highlighting features like a narrow bezel 18:9 aspect ratio display and four cameras. The phone is very well designed, has very good quality cameras, good display and good overall features which make it a well balanced smartphone. However, performance is the area where it won’t be a right choice for heavy gamers otherwise, it is a great package. And if you wanted to buy an 18:9 aspect ratio phone, the Honor 9i is the best choice in the budget segment, and is one of the best phones under 20000 Rs.

2. Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro:

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy J7 Pro in India, which packs some decent features and looks like the best smartphone they have launched under the affordable ‘J series’ yet. The phone packs a beautiful and premium metal unibody design with 2.5D curved glass on top, and holds rounded corners around the edges which makes it comfortable to hold. The build quality is also very good. The greatest thing in the phone is the revolutionary ‘Samsung Pay’, which enables you to store your card information in your phone and pay wirelessly. It works with almost all the POS machines… Expand Review

in India and to make a payment, all you need to do is, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, use fingerprint or pin to authorise the transaction and place the phone against the POS machine and your payment is done securely. The Galaxy J7 Pro holds a 5.5 inches Full HD Super AMOLED display with 401 ppi pixel density and has a very good display quality. Coming to the performance, it is powered by the 1.6 GHz octa core Exynos 7870 processor coupled with 3 GB RAM and Mali-T830 MP2 GPU and delivers good performance for normal usage as well as for some gaming. However, hardcore gamers have much better options available at this price. The Galaxy J7 Pro sports a 13 MP rear camera with f1.7 lens and LED flash and has a good picture quality, low light photos are decent as well. It also packs a 13 MP front camera with f1.9 lens and LED flash as well, the selfies come out good too. With the Galaxy J7 Pro, Samsung has also introduced a new feature called ‘Social Camera’ into its camera app. The Social Camera packs lots of features like ‘Instant Share’ which lets you share the picture with different social/messaging apps and marked contacts in WhatsApp, it also includes ‘Instant Edit’ which lets you add stickers and effects and you can share it instantly. The camera app also includes lots of popular and fun live stickers and live filters also, so it gives a complete set of features for selfie lovers. The phone runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung’s new UX which comes with less bloatware and is a lighter version of the Touchwiz UI. It looks better and has some added features and themes support. It has got a decent fingerprint scanner situated in the home button below the screen. The J7 Pro comes with IP54 certification and is splash proof. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 128 GB via microSD card, thankfully, uses a dedicated slot. A non-removable Li-Ion 3600 mAh battery powers the phone and delivers good battery backup, sadly it doesn’t include fast charging which is a must at this price.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro is a pretty balanced phone with beautiful looks and decent cameras. However, ‘Samsung Pay’ really makes it stand out from the crowd, the inclusion of Samsung Pay in a phone around 20000 Rs. means it will be in the reach of more people in India, and Samsung Pay in itself makes the phone a worthy buying option. Also, it ticks most of the boxes right and there’s not much we can complain about. We can surely demand more performance at this price but, considering it comes from one of the most trusted and reputable brands and brings an exclusive feature, we can not call it overpriced as well.

3. Samsung Galaxy On Max:

After the Galaxy J7 Pro and J7 Max, Samsung has launched yet another smartphone under the sub 20000 Rs. segment, known as the Galaxy On Max. It is an almost similar device like the J7 Max and shares only few differences. Samsung has really improved upon the build quality of its budget devices and the Galaxy On Max also comes in a beautiful metallic body which looks good and feels premium. It packs a massive 5.7 inches Full HD screen which has good display quality. Although some users… Expand Review

may not be comfortable in holding and handling this big phone but, a bigger screen is always a treat, giving you more space for your content. It has also got a 2.5D curved glass on top. A highlight of the phone is, it comes with ‘Samsung Pay Mini’ which is a light version of Samsung Pay, it has fewer hardware requirements, comes with lesser features but is still a very good addition rather, a good capability to have in your phone. It runs on the 2.39 GHz octa core MediaTek Helio P25 processor, coupled with 4 GB of RAM. It delivers good performance and handles games smoothly, without overheating. Although serious gamers should opt for the more powerful phones with Snapdragon processors. Another highlight of the Galaxy On Max is its cameras, it packs a 13 MP f/1.7 aperture rear camera and a 13 MP f/1.9 front camera, having LED flash on both front and back. The picture quality of both the cameras is very impressive. The low light pictures also come out good, with low noise levels and good details. The camera app also includes ‘Social Camera’ which packs lots of features like ‘Instant Share’ which lets you share the picture with different social/messaging apps and marked contacts in WhatsApp, it also includes ‘Instant Edit’ which lets you add stickers and effects and you can share it instantly. The camera app also includes various live stickers and live filters and provides great fun options for selfie lovers. On the software front, Samsung has adopted the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with its new UX running on top. It comes with less bloatware and is a lighter version of the Touchwiz UI, it also looks better and has some added features and themes support. It features a fast fingerprint scanner embedded on the home button. It supports dual sim with dedicated slots and supports 4G and VoLTE. The Galaxy On Max comes with 32 GB of onboard storage which is expandable up to 256 GB via microSD card. It is powered by a non-removable 3300 mAh battery which gives good battery backup but sadly, it doesn’t come with fast charging support.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy On Max is a very good smartphone. It packs excellent cameras, good design, good big display, decent performance, Samsung Pay Mini, latest software and the trust of Samsung. It is a complete package and a very good choice at its price.

4. ZTE Nubia Z17 Mini:

ZTE now seems to be gathering some pace in the Indian market as it is aggressively launching new phone every now and then. It has recently launched its new Nubia Z17 Mini which packs some decent specifications under a good looking body. The Nubia Z17 Mini comes with a full metal unibody which is sturdy, slim and beautiful. The 2.5D curved glass complements the design well. accurate colors and nice viewing angles. The screen comes protected with Corning Gorilla Glass (version unknown). The Nubia Z17 Mini runs on the popular and powerful 1.95 GHz octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor coupled with 4 GB and Adreno 510 GPU. The performance is very good, heavy games and multitasking are smooth. However, the biggest highlight of the phone is its dual rear camera setup which includes two 13 MP Sony IMX258 sensors, out of which one clicks RGB (color) and other clicks Monochrome (black & white) images, which are then combined together to produce high quality images with added depth and details. The picture quality is very good in day light as well as low light conditions. Also, the feature rich camera app comes with Bokeh effect, 3D Mode, Portrait mode, Refocus/Blur after click, Black & White shots, Time Shuttle, Star trail and more features. With excellent picture quality and great camera features, the Nubia Z17 Mini is a great camera phone. The 16 MP f/2.0 aperture front camera with lots of filters is a very good shooter as well, it also comes with a ‘screen flash’ to assist in low light selfies. The phone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow based Nubia UI 4.0, which offers some additional features like double click on the edge to go back, swipe up/down from the edge to switch or start apps, swipe repeatedly from the edge to free up RAM, swipe from both edges to adjust brightness and swipe up from bottom of the screen to split the screen into two to let you access two apps at the same time. It features a good fingerprint scanner on the back and comes with USB Type-C for data syncing and charging. It is a dual sim (hybrid slot) phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 200 GB via microSD card. The phone is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 2950 mAh battery, now this is the part which should have been better as the processor used in this phone is not very battery efficient like the Snapdragon 625, although the battery backup is decent enough and it also supports fast charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the ZTE Nubia Z17 Mini is a very good mid-budget smartphone which packs great cameras, excellent performance, beautiful design and balanced features. It ticks most of the boxes right and can be a very good choice if you want a camera centric smartphone.
