1. Huawei Honor 8 Pro:

Huawei has launched its contender in the mid-range flagship smartphones category, and its warrior is the new Honor 8 Pro which packs some great hardware and amazing specifications and promises a lot. It comes in a slim 7 mm metal unibody which has excellent build quality and beautiful looks. On the top, there is a 2.5D curved glass, which adds to the looks and comfort. display with 515 ppi pixel density and has excellent quality, watching movies and videos is a treat. The Honor 8 Pro runs on Huawei’s own 2.4 GHz octa core HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor coupled with 6 GB RAM and Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The performance is great, it can handle everything, be it intensive multitasking or heaviest games, it handles smoothly. Another great thing about the phone is its highlighting dual rear camera setup which consists of two 12 MP sensors with f/2.2 aperture, out of which one is the RGB (color) sensor and other is the monochrome (black & white) sensor. When you click a shot both the sensors work together, with the RGB sensor capturing the subject and color data, the monochrome sensor captures additional details. The pictures have amazing quality, good details and accurate colors. There is nice bokeh effect and the monochrome sensor can capture black and white shots on its own, and they turn out really good. Huawei’s camera app includes lots of modes and features, including a full professional mode and options to change vital settings of a picture after it is captured. The 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens is a good selfie shooter as well. The Honor 8 Pro runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with company’s EMUI 5.1 running on top. The EMUI is beautiful and comes packed with features and customisations. It also includes a private second partition which is totally separate from the primary partition, and can be accessed directly from the dedicated fingerprint. The fingerprint scanner situated on the back is very fast and accurate. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs a great 128 GB of onboard storage which is expandable up to another 128 GB but, uses a hybrid slot. The phone is backed by a big non-removable Li-Po 4,000 mAh battery which despite the big 2k display, delivers a good one day’s battery backup, it also supports fast charging. It packs in an IR blaster and lets you control electronic devices as a remote, it uses Type-C USB for data syncing and charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Honor 8 Pro is a great, well-designed and power packed smartphone. Be it performance, cameras, display, battery or software, it has got everything right with a perfect balance. It delivers a very good flagship like user experience and can be a very good alternative to the OnePlus 5. It offers some serious value for money and is the best phone under 25000 Rs. after the price cut.

2. Moto X4 (4 GB):

After a long wait, Motorola has launched its highly anticipated phone in the popular ‘Moto X’ series – the Moto X4. Currently, Motorola has its Moto Z series as flagship and the Moto G series as budget offering and the company has introduced the Moto X series to sit between the two. The Moto X4 is meant to be a premium offering than the Moto G5s Plus and it very successfully achieves that with its premium glass and metal design, with Corning Gorilla Glass on the front and back and a metal frame in-between. The glasses blend perfectly into the frame and the phone looks very beautiful and gets full marks in the design… Expand Review

The fingerprint scanner unlocks really quickly and sits in the home button below the display. The Moto X4 comes with a 5.2 inches Full HD regular display and there is no bezel less or edge to edge display with 18:9 aspect ratio, despite many companies adapting to it, Motorola has not switched to it with the Moto X4. The display quality and the colors are good. It runs on the 2.2 GHz octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor along with Adreno 508 GPU and comes in 3 GB & 4 GB RAM variants. The performance is very smooth and optimized for day to usage and it also handles heavy games well. One of the highlights of the Moto X4 is its 12 MP + 8 MP dual rear camera setup, where the 12 MP sensor is the primary shooter with Dual Autofocus Pixel technology and 1.4um pixels while the 8 MP camera is the wide-angle shooter with 120° field of view. The picture quality is very good in day as well as low light conditions. Great thing about the 8 MP wide-angle camera is, it really works well and captures a much wider frame so you get a lot more in your photos by standing closer, which is not possible with normal sensors. The portrait shots also come out good with nice bokeh effects and you can always edit the depth enabled photos to keep the subject in colors while the background in black and white or cut out the subject and change the background, and a lot more. The Moto X4 features a 16 MP front camera with LED flash and is an excellent selfie shooter. It runs on Android 7.1 Nougat and will get the Android Oreo update soon. As always with a Moto phone, it comes with stock Android, which gives a great experience, thankfully Motorola has not altered Stock Android but has introduced its Moto Experiences which perfectly compliments the stock Android and enhances its usability. It includes gestures like Chop twice to turn on flashlight, Twist for quick capture, Swipe to shrink screen etc. One of my favourites is the One Button Navigation using the fingerprint scanner, which can be used to replace the onscreen navigation buttons, and you can swipe left to right, right to left or tap on the fingerprint scanner for Recent apps, Back and Home actions. It takes a little time to get used to it but is a nice addition as it frees up a lot of screen space. Another great thing about the phone is that, it is IP68 certified dust & water proof, a feature which is mostly missing in budget and mid-budget phones. So, you can bath, swim or enjoy the rains with your Moto X4 without fear. Thankfully, Motorola has not compromised this time and added USB Type-C to the Moto X4. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE. Sadly, this time it only gets a hybrid sim slot. It gets 32 GB and 64 GB internal storage variants, which can be expanded up to 2 TB via microSD. The Moto X4 is backed by non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup. It comes with Motorola’s Turbo Charging with a 15W fast charger. It also includes Bluetooth v5.0 and allows you to connect 4 audio devices at the same time.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Moto X4 is a well-thought premium smartphone with all-round features. It packs in excellent cameras, excellent design, good performance, stock Android and a lot more. More importantly, the phone successfully delivers a premium experience and one can enjoy it for a long time. It is really one of the best phones under 25000 Rs. in India.

3. Asus Zenfone Zoom S:

Asus has launched the new Zenfone Zoom S, which is its dual camera smartphone in the mid budget segment. It comes in a beautiful metallic body which has small plastic patches on the top and bottom of the back panel. It packs in a massive 5000 mAh battery and despite that it weighs just 170 grams and is relatively thin at 7.99 mm. So design wise, Asus has done a very good job with the Zenfone Zoom S. The 5.5 inches Full HD AMOLED screen has good quality with good viewing angles and comes protected with 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5. On the performance front, it is powered by the 2.0 GHz Octa core Snapdragon 625 processor, which is a very popular and proven performer, but at this price… Expand Review

a more powerful processor is highly expected, like most of its competitors are offering. It comes with 4 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU, and like we know the processor handles daily usage and gaming very well without heating and is also battery efficient. Coming to its most important highlight, from where it gets its name, it comes with a dual rear camera setup on the back with two 12 MP sensors. The primary sensor is the Sony’s flagship IMX362 with f/1.7 aperture, 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization, 3-axis Electronic Image Stabilization, ASUS’s TriTech+ Auto Focus system (Dual Pixel PDAF + Laser auto-focus + Subject tracking auto-focus) with 0.03s instant focus, 4K UHD 30 fps video recording and Dual-LED flash while the second one is the Zoom camera with 2.3x optical zoom. The dual camera system clicks excellent photos with good colors, in the low light conditions also it manages to click good images with low grains however lacks details sometimes. Overall, the picture quality is very satisfactory. On the front, there is a 13 MP Sony IMX214 sensor with f/2.0 aperture, it clicks some nice selfies having good colors and details. The camera app also offers a Portrait mode, Beautify mode, Selfie Panorama, GIF Animation and lots of modes and filters. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with company’s ZenUI 3.0, however an update to Android Nougat is available. The ZenUI, though feature rich, needs lots of work. It gets a good fingerprint scanner on the back, at a comfortable position to operate. It packs in 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 2 TB via microSD card, it additionally provides 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive for 1 year. It comes with hybrid slot and supports 4G, VoLTE. The battery life on the phone is good and it can last you for two days with moderate to heavy usage. It comes with a 5V / 2A, 10W charger which charges the phone quickly, a good thing is, it also comes with Reverse Charging which lets you charge other phones. It also comes with DTS Headphone:X, which can provide 7.1 channel virtual surround sound over the supported headphones.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Asus Zenfone Zoom S with its excellent dual cameras, massive battery, premium design, good display and good performance is a good balanced phone. However, the price at which the company has placed this phone offers more powerful phones with better features. Also, the ZenUI needs more work. So, it now depends on what you feel, the phone is good but at few more thousands, you can get much better phones like the Honor 8 Pro or the OnePlus 5.

4. Oppo F5 (6 GB):

Oppo, famous for its selfie focused smartphones, has launched its latest smartphone Oppo F5, which is yet another selfie focused smartphone but this time, the phone packs a lot more. Let’s first start with the design, the highlighting aspect of the Oppo F5 design is its bezel less display with almost no bezels on the side and minimum bezels on the top and bottom. Due to this, the phone looks beautiful and accommodates a big 6 inches screen in the size of a typical 5.5 inches phone. There back is made up of matte finish aluminium, which… Expand Review

feels very good in hands. The build quality is sturdy and with 152 grams of weight and 7.2 mm thickness it is well designed. Summing up the design, the Oppo F5 is a beautiful well designed phone in the mid range segment. The 6 inch LTPS IPS screen comes with FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels, the screen is taller and comes with 18:9 aspect ratio, a feature which started with flagship phones and is now becoming a trend in the budget segment as well. The display quality is decent but the colors are not very punchy, like you would expect in a phone which highlights its display however, it is not bad and can’t be considered as a downside/con. The Oppo F5 runs on a 2.5 GHz octa core Mediatek MT6763T Helio P23 processor coupled with 4 GB RAM and Mali-G71 MP2. The performance is good enough for day to day usage and some gaming but there can be some issues with the graphics intensive games as the GPU is not a very powerful one, even the processor cannot be compared for smoothness with the Snapdragon 625, found on most of the phones in this price segment. Now coming to the strongest zones of the phone – the camera department, the Oppo F5 comes with a 20 MP front camera with F2.0 aperture and 1/2.8” sensor. It is an excellent selfie shooter, the selfies turn out great in day light and it does decent in low light conditions as well. It comes with AI (Artificial Intelligence) powered facial beautification for selfies which does a pretty good job in beautifying your face by smoothening it and hiding all the undesired elements. It also comes with portrait shots for selfies, which adds nice bokeh effect but it still doesn’t perfectly recognize the edges. In all, the Oppo F5 is one of the best selfie shooters in its price. On the rear, there is a 16 MP camera with F1.8 aperture, it is again a good shooter in day light conditions. However, unlike most new phones these days, the Oppo F5 doesn’t come with a dual camera setup. The Oppo F5 packs in a good fingerprint scanner on the back, but interestingly it also includes ‘Facial unlock’ which scans your face and lets you unlock your phone by simply looking at it. It runs on Android v7.1 Nougat based ColorOS 3.2 which is a very heavily customised Android skin, completely different from stock Android but comes with lots of features and first party apps. It comes with 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256 GB via microSD card. It is a dual sim phone with dedicated slots. The phone is backed by a non-removable 3200 mAh Li-Ion battery which delivers good battery backup and although the company doesn’t mention the VOOC fast charging, but the phone ships with a 5V, 2A charger which charges it quickly.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Oppo F5 with its excellent selfie camera, excellent bezel less design with big 6 inches 18:9 aspect ratio display, AI capabilities, good performance and all the features is a good well balanced phone. Unlike earlier phones from Oppo in this price range which only excelled in selfies, the Oppo F5 takes care of all the vital aspects required for a good smartphone experience but the 6 GB RAM variant is very highly overpriced.

  • Good performance for daily usage

5. Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro:

Asus has launched its new Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro in India, which is one of the first phones in its Zenfone 4 series in the country. The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro comes with the best specifications, the Zenfone Selfie series has ever seen. It comes in a very premium metallic unibody design which is slim (6.85 mm) and light weight (147 grams) and feels excellent in hands. The build quality is very good and the two colors, Deep Sea Black and Sunlight Gold look beautiful. The 5.5 inches AMOLED display with 500 nits brightness has excellent quality, the viewing angles are good and the colors are bright and natural… Expand Review

It also comes with a 2.5D curved Coning Gorilla Glass. The phone is powered by the 2.0 GHz Octa core Snapdragon 625 processor, which is a popular and proven performer, it was also used in the Zenfone 3 also. It comes with Adreno 506 GPU and 4 GB RAM, and handles daily usage smoothly and plays games well without heating and is also battery efficient. However, the highlight of the phone is its camera department, which packs some massive number, obviously justifying its name. Let’s talk about the front camera first. The dual camera setup comprises of a primary 24 MP camera with Sony’s flagship IMX362 dual pixel image sensor having f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 5 MP camera with 120° wide-angle. The front cameras are also accompanied with LED flash. The selfies come out really excellent and have good details, natural colors and wide-angle. It has one of the best selfie cameras in the market. The camera app also offers a Portrait mode, Beautify mode, Selfie Panorama, GIF Animation and lots of modes and filters. The 16 MP rear camera again with a Sony sensor is a very good shooter as well. It also supports a full Pro mode. Both the front and rear cameras can record 4K UHD video at 30 fps and support 3-axis EIS (electronic image stabilization). It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with company’s updated ZenUI 4.0, which now packs some very useful features like Twin apps, Safeguard, Themes and Lock Screen Wallpapers and looks like it is taking the Xiaomi’s MIUI way but, I still feel the UI, visually in particular, needs a lot of work and needs to becomes simpler, cleaner and minimalist. Also, instead of getting even more customised and heavier, it should move more towards the stock Android which will allow faster updates. But, keeping these few things aside, the ZenUI 4.0 now packs more useful features and is a fine custom skin which runs well. The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro embeds a very fast fingerprint scanner on the home button in the front. It comes with 64 GB of onboard storage which is expandable up to 2 TB via microSD card, it additionally provides 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive for 1 year. It has two dedicated sim slots and the phone supports 4G. The phone is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery, thanks to the processor, it delivers good battery for one day use. It supports fast charging and comes with a 5V / 2A, 10W charger. It also comes with DTS Headphone:X, which provides 7.1 channel virtual surround sound over the headphones.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro right from its name, is all about its excellent front camera. It is truly a wonderful phone for selfie lovers with hard to beat features and quality. However, the greatest thing about the phone is that, it is a pretty balanced phone. It packs in an excellent display, excellent premium design, good rear camera, good performance, good storage and latest software along with good battery life. What this means is, the Zefone 4 Selfie Pro is a very good smartphone to buy, not only for selfie lovers but for all types of users, unlike most of its selfie focused competitors from Oppo, Vivo and Gionee.
