1. OnePlus 5 (6/64 GB):

Note: The OnePlus 5 starts at Rs. 32,999 and doesn’t exactly fall under Rs. 30,000 price range. But it is a great phone and must be considered by anyone who has a budget around 25,000 Rs. And if you have a budget of Rs. 30,000, increasing it by few thousands won’t be a big concern so, we have included the OnePlus 5 in the under Rs. 30,000 price range.

One of the most anticipated phones of the year – the new flagship killer OnePlus 5 is launched now. For past few months there had been new leaks and rumors every other day and lots of hype around the OnePlus 5, and why not? OnePlus phones have given the best of the best smartphones from top brands like Apple, Samsung, Google and LG a solid run for their money. All the flagship OnePlus phones have been extremely popular and super value for money, and the same popularity can be already seen for the OnePlus 5 however, we will need to take a close look at the phone and its offering as this time the company has increased its price… Expand Review

The OnePlus 5 comes with a slim premium metallic body which looks very beautiful and feels comfortable to hold. Although it is not a very new design and we have seen a similar design on some phones like the iPhone 7 Plus, it should not really be a concern. It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD Optic AMOLED display, and this time also OnePlus hasn’t upgraded it to 4K display like many expected. However, the display quality is vibrant and excellent, and you won’t really miss 4K. The OnePlus 5 runs on one of the most powerful mobile processors in the world, flagship from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.45 GHz and paired with Adreno 540 GPU. The phone comes in two variants, one with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage and other with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, the whooping 8 GB RAM is the highest you can get in a smartphone at present. Needless to say, the performance is mind blowing, it can handle everything you can throw at it, be it lots and lots of apps or heaviest of the games, it handles everything like a boss ????. Coming to another great aspect of the phone, which is indeed the most highlighted feature, the dual rear camera setup. The OnePlus 5 comes with a 16 MP (Sony IMX 398, f/1.7) primary rear camera and a 20 MP (Sony IMX 350, f/2.6) telephoto camera. The picture quality is amazing and one of the best in the world. The dual cameras produce nice bokeh effect and for more background blurring, there is a portrait mode which works to a good extent however, some times images look abrupt and artificial. It also supports 2x optical zoom and a full pro mode. It can record 4K videos at 30fps and comes with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation). The 16 MP front camera with Sony IMX 371 sensor and f/2.0 aperture is a great selfie shooter. The phone runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat with OnePlus’s Oxygen OS running on top, it is very close to stock Android and includes some nice features. OnePlus 5 packs a very fast fingerprint scanner in the home button. A nice feature is, the home button can be tapped twice to perform your desired action like opening camera or locking the screen, etc. It comes with USB Type-C for charging and data transfer, and also comes with the latest Bluetooth v5.0 and NFC. It supports two 4G sim cards and VoLTE. The OnePlus 5 packs in a non-removable Li-Po 3300 mAh battery which supports OnePlus’s Dash Charge technology and charges the phone pretty quickly. The battery backup is good and the phone lasts for around a day with heavy usage. It has good audio quality and if you love reading a lot, it also comes with a Reading Mode and makes your phone like an e-book reader.

Should you buy?
Overall, the OnePlus 5 is one of the most powerful phones in the world with great cameras and has been built with attention to minute details. It is not only beautiful from outside but the UI is also beautiful, useful and stable. Apart from the great hardware and user experience, the OnePlus 5 also delivers a very good ownership experience with millions of users worldwide. It is a true flagship phone and delivers everything one can desire at its price. A great buy!

Huawei has launched its contender in the mid range flagship smartphones category, and its warrior is the new Honor 8 Pro which packs some great hardware and amazing specifications and promises a lot. It comes in a slim 7 mm metal unibody which has excellent build quality and beautiful looks. On the top, there is a 2.5D curved glass, which adds to the looks and comfort. display with 515 ppi pixel density and has excellent quality, watching movies and videos is a treat. The Honor 8 Pro runs on Huawei’s own 2.4 GHz octa core HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor coupled with 6 GB RAM and Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The performance is great, it can handle everything, be it intensive multitasking or heaviest games, it handles smoothly. Another great thing about the phone is its highlighting dual rear camera setup which consists of two 12 MP sensors with f/2.2 aperture, out of which one is the RGB (color) sensor and other is the monochrome (black & white) sensor. When you click a shot both the sensors work together, with the RGB sensor capturing the subject and color data, the monochrome sensor captures additional details. The pictures have amazing quality, good details and accurate colors. There is nice bokeh effect and the monochrome sensor can capture black and white shots on its own, and they turn out really good. Huawei’s camera app includes lots of modes and features, including a full professional mode and options to change vital settings of a picture after it is captured. The 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens is a good selfie shooter as well. The Honor 8 Pro runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with company’s EMUI 5.1 running on top. The EMUI is beautiful and comes packed with features and customisations. It also includes a private second partition which is totally separate from the primary partition, and can be accessed directly from the dedicated fingerprint. The fingerprint scanner situated on the back is very fast and accurate. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs a great 128 GB of onboard storage which is expandable upto another 128 GB but, uses a hybrid slot. The phone is backed by a big non-removable Li-Po 4,000 mAh battery which despite the big 2k display, delivers a good one day’s battery backup, it also supports fast charging. It packs in an IR blaster and lets you control electronic devices as a remote, it uses Type-C USB for data syncing and charging.

Should you buy?
Overall, the Honor 8 Pro is great well designed power packed smartphone. Be it performance, cameras, display, battery or software, it has got everything right with a perfect balance. It delivers a very good flagship like user experience and can be a very good alternative to the OnePlus 5. It offers some serious value for money and is one of the best phones under 30000 Rs.

3. LG V20:

LG’s last year’s flagship LG V20 is a greatly under rated phone despite packing some excellent specifications. But now, with its reducing prices, it costs around Rs. 30,000. Let’s take a look at how worthy the phone is in the current market. The LG V20 comes with military grade aluminium body which is sturdy and can absorb some impacts, the build quality is really premium. Moreover, despite the full metal body, the phone also has a removable back cover and removable battery, which is very uncommon in current generation flagship phones. The phone at the same time… Expand Review

looks beautiful and has well balanced weight across the body. One of the highlights of the phone is that it comes with two displays, out of which, the primary is the usual 5.7 inches Quad HD display which excellent display quality. Just above the primary screen on the front, sits the 2.1 inches secondary display which is a very good addition and is used to show app shortcuts, quick settings toggles, recent apps, notifications and also shows controls for apps like Camera. The secondary display adds uniqueness to the phone and provides a cool simple panel to interact quickly with your phone. Like most of last year’s flagship phone, the LG V20 runs on the powerful Snapdragon 820 processor couple with Adreno 530 GPU and 4 GB of RAM. It handles everything pretty smoothly, be it daily usage, gaming or multitasking. Another big highlight of the phone is the dual camera setup on the back. It packs in a 16 MP, f/1.8 aperture primary sensor with Laser autofocus, OIS and another 8 MP, 135 degree wide angle sensor. The picture quality and the colors on the LG V20 are excellent, the secondary wide angle camera allows you to capture additional background in your image. The phone’s camera app is very feature rich, it provides all the manual controls and let’s you play and experiment. It can record 2160p vieos @30fps and along with OIS also comes with Steady Record 2.0, which is LG’s software enhancement to additionally stabilise the video. On the front, it has a 5 MP selfie shooter with f/1.9 aperture and 120 degree wide angle, and again has decent quality. The third highlight of the LG V20 is its audio qualities. It comes with 3 High AOP (Acoustic Overload Point) Mics which allow you to record loud scenes at sporting events without cheering fans distorting the sound. It also comes with Hi-Fi Quad DAC, special high-end B&O PLAY earphones, HD Audio Recorder & Studio Mode and in all, provides excellent sound quality via the speakers and headphones for music lovers and also has special features for content creators. The LG V20 was the first phone to come with the Android 7.0 Nougat last year and runs on LG UX 5.0 overlaid on top. The LG UX is a heavily customised skin and offers some customisation and lots of features but, I am never really impressed with how LG’s UI looks – like the thing of past. It has a good fingerprint scanner on the back and comes with USB Type-C for data syncing and charging. It also comes with NFC and infrared blaster. It is a dual sim phone with dedicated slots for both the sim. It comes with 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256 GB via microSD card. The phone is backed by a 3200 mAh Li-Ion battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support and delivers good battery backup.

Should you buy?
Overall, the LG V20 is a true flagship phone. It comes with excellent design, secondary display, excellent cameras, excellent performance, excellent audio capabilities and lots of other features. It can still be a very good choice if you are comfortable in using a big phone.

4. Moto Z2 Play:

Motorola has launched an upgraded variant of its popular modular smartphone Moto Z Play, as the new Moto Z2 Play. It supports all the new and existing Moto Mods but, let’s come to it later and start with the design first. The Moto Z2 Play comes with an almost similar design like the Moto Z Play but, it is much thinner at just 5.99 mm and also comes with a premium metallic back this time. It looks beautiful with antenna lines surrounding all the edges of the back and the big circular camera unit, although it has big hump. It is really thin and scores very good in the design department… Expand Review

It sports a 5.5. inches Full HD Super AMOLED display which has excellent colors, good brightness and a very good overall quality. The Moto Z2 Play is powered by the 2.2 GHz octa core Snapdragon 626 processor paired with 4 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU. At this price, one expects a powerful processor from Qualcomm’s ‘Snapdragon 800’ series but even with the Snapdragon 626 the performance is very good. It can handle multitasking and gaming very well and doesn’t heat up as well. It packs a 12 MP rear camera with Dual Autofocus Pixel, ƒ/1.7 aperture, Laser Autofocus a full Pro Mode, Auto Night mode and dual-LED flash. The picture quality is very good and significantly improved over the Moto Z Play. It can record 4K videos at 30 fps. The Moto Z2 Play packs a 5 MP front camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture Wide-Angle lens, beautification modes and a dual-LED flash as well. It clicks good selfies and due to the flash, low light selfies also turn out very good. It runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Stock Android UI, which comes with few Motorola enhancements like the Moto Display (shows time and notification icon when screen is lock), Moto Voice (a voice assistant, which when asked, for example, “show me the weather”, quickly shows the weather app), Moto Actions (helpful actions like twist the phone to open camera, chop twice to turn on flashlight, etc.). It packs a very fast and responsive fingerprint scanner which, apart from unlocking the phone, also locks the phone when long tapped. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support and packs in 64 GB of onboard storage which is expandable via microSD card through a dedicated slot. It comes with Water repellent nano-coating which helps you with occasional splashes. The Moto Z2 Play is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports Motorola’s TurboPower fast charging. Now, coming to its most important feature, the Moto Mods, to explain in details, Moto Mods are the swappable back covers which attach to the phone via strong magnets and can be interchanged very easily. There are various Moto Mods like the Insta-Share Projector Mod which converts your phone into a mini projector and can prove very handy for small presentations and meetings, the new JBL SoundBoost 2 Mod which adds loud rich quality stereo sound to your phone, it also comes with kickstand so pull it and there is no need to carry any other portable speaker for music, the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod, which converts your phone into a true digital camera with 10x optical zoom, xenon flash, physical shutter and zoom buttons and grip like standard cameras, the Incipio offGRID™ Power Pack Mod which is a powerbank mod and adds extra battery life to the phone and also the Moto Style Shells which give different styles and looks to the phone. The Moto Mods are obviously great additions to the phone, but they come at a price which is very big!

Should you buy?
Overall, the Moto Z2 Play is very well designed slim phone with excellent cameras, great display, good performance, good battery life and great stock Android software. It is an all round phone with good balance of everything. And when you add the Moto Mods to it, the experience goes to a whole different level with great capabilities added to your smartphone. Even if you give the expensive Moto Mods a miss, it is still a very good smartphone.

a more powerful processor is highly expected, like most of its competitors are offering. It comes with 4 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU, and like we know the processor handles daily usage and gaming very well without heating and is also battery efficient. Coming to its most important highlight, from where it gets its name, it comes with a dual rear camera setup on the back with two 12 MP sensors. The primary sensor is the Sony’s flagship IMX362 with f/1.7 aperture, 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization, 3-axis Electronic Image Stabilization, ASUS’s TriTech+ Auto Focus system (Dual Pixel PDAF + Laser auto-focus + Subject tracking auto-focus) with 0.03s instant focus, 4K UHD 30 fps video recording and Dual-LED flash while the second one is the Zoom camera with 2.3x optical zoom. The dual camera system clicks excellent photos with good colors, in the low light conditions also it manages to click good images with low grains however lacks details sometimes. Overall, the picture quality is very satisfactory. On the front, there is a 13 MP Sony IMX214 sensor with f/2.0 aperture, it clicks some nice selfies having good colors and details. The camera app also offers a Portrait mode, Beautify mode, Selfie Panorama, GIF Animation and lots of modes and filters. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with company’s ZenUI 3.0, however an update to Android Nougat is available. The ZenUI, though feature rich, needs lots of work. Should you buy?
Overall, the Asus Zenfone Zoom S with its excellent dual cameras, massive battery, premium design, good display and good performance is a good balanced phone. However, the price at which the company has placed this phone offers more powerful phones with better features. Also, the ZenUI needs more work. So, it now depends on what you feel, the phone is good but at few more thousands, you can get much better phones like the Honor 8 Pro or the OnePlus 5.
