Best Smartphone under 30000 Rs. since Jun-17

1. OnePlus 5 (6/64 GB):

Note: The OnePlus 5 starts at Rs. 32,999 and doesn’t exactly fall under Rs. 30,000 price range. But it is a great phone and must be considered by anyone who has a budget around 25,000 Rs. And if you have a budget of Rs. 30,000, increasing it by few thousands won’t be a big concern so, we have included the OnePlus 5 in the under Rs. 30,000 price range.

One of the most anticipated phones of the year – the new flagship killer OnePlus 5 is launched now. For past few months there had been new leaks and rumors every other day and lots of hype around the OnePlus 5, and why not? OnePlus phones have given the best of the best smartphones from top brands like Apple, Samsung, Google and LG a solid run for their money. All the flagship OnePlus phones have been extremely popular and super value for money, and the same popularity can be already seen for the OnePlus 5 however, we will need to take a close look at the phone and its offering as this time the company has increased its price… Expand Review

The OnePlus 5 comes with a slim premium metallic body which looks very beautiful and feels comfortable to hold. Although it is not a very new design and we have seen a similar design on some phones like the iPhone 7 Plus, it should not really be a concern. It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD Optic AMOLED display, and this time also OnePlus hasn’t upgraded it to 4K display like many expected. However, the display quality is vibrant and excellent, and you won’t really miss 4K. The OnePlus 5 runs on one of the most powerful mobile processors in the world, flagship from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.45 GHz and paired with Adreno 540 GPU. The phone comes in two variants, one with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage and other with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, the whooping 8 GB RAM is the highest you can get in a smartphone at present. Needless to say, the performance is mind blowing, it can handle everything you can throw at it, be it lots and lots of apps or heaviest of the games, it handles everything like a boss ????. Coming to another great aspect of the phone, which is indeed the most highlighted feature, the dual rear camera setup. The OnePlus 5 comes with a 16 MP (Sony IMX 398, f/1.7) primary rear camera and a 20 MP (Sony IMX 350, f/2.6) telephoto camera. The picture quality is amazing and one of the best in the world. The dual cameras produce nice bokeh effect and for more background blurring, there is a portrait mode which works to a good extent however, some times images look abrupt and artificial. It also supports 2x optical zoom and a full pro mode. It can record 4K videos at 30fps and comes with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation). The 16 MP front camera with Sony IMX 371 sensor and f/2.0 aperture is a great selfie shooter. The phone runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat with OnePlus’s Oxygen OS running on top, it is very close to stock Android and includes some nice features. OnePlus 5 packs a very fast fingerprint scanner in the home button. A nice feature is, the home button can be tapped twice to perform your desired action like opening camera or locking the screen, etc. It comes with USB Type-C for charging and data transfer, and also comes with the latest Bluetooth v5.0 and NFC. It supports two 4G sim cards and VoLTE. The OnePlus 5 packs in a non-removable Li-Po 3300 mAh battery which supports OnePlus’s Dash Charge technology and charges the phone pretty quickly. The battery backup is good and the phone lasts for around a day with heavy usage. It has good audio quality and if you love reading a lot, it also comes with a Reading Mode and makes your phone like an e-book reader.

Overall, the OnePlus 5 is one of the most powerful phones in the world with great cameras and has been built with attention to minute details. It is not only beautiful from outside but the UI is also beautiful, useful and stable. Apart from the great hardware and user experience, the OnePlus 5 also delivers a very good ownership experience with millions of users worldwide. It is a true flagship phone and delivers everything one can desire at its price. A great buy!

Huawei has launched its contender in the mid range flagship smartphones category, and its warrior is the new Honor 8 Pro which packs some great hardware and amazing specifications and promises a lot. It comes in a slim 7 mm metal unibody which has excellent build quality and beautiful looks. On the top, there is a 2.5D curved glass, which adds to the looks and comfort. display with 515 ppi pixel density and has excellent quality, watching movies and videos is a treat. The Honor 8 Pro runs on Huawei’s own 2.4 GHz octa core HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor coupled with 6 GB RAM and Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The performance is great, it can handle everything, be it intensive multitasking or heaviest games, it handles smoothly. Another great thing about the phone is its highlighting dual rear camera setup which consists of two 12 MP sensors with f/2.2 aperture, out of which one is the RGB (color) sensor and other is the monochrome (black & white) sensor. When you click a shot both the sensors work together, with the RGB sensor capturing the subject and color data, the monochrome sensor captures additional details. The pictures have amazing quality, good details and accurate colors. There is nice bokeh effect and the monochrome sensor can capture black and white shots on its own, and they turn out really good. Huawei’s camera app includes lots of modes and features, including a full professional mode and options to change vital settings of a picture after it is captured. The 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens is a good selfie shooter as well. The Honor 8 Pro runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with company’s EMUI 5.1 running on top. The EMUI is beautiful and comes packed with features and customisations. It also includes a private second partition which is totally separate from the primary partition, and can be accessed directly from the dedicated fingerprint. The fingerprint scanner situated on the back is very fast and accurate. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. It packs a great 128 GB of onboard storage which is expandable upto another 128 GB but, uses a hybrid slot. The phone is backed by a big non-removable Li-Po 4,000 mAh battery which despite the big 2k display, delivers a good one day’s battery backup, it also supports fast charging. It packs in an IR blaster and lets you control electronic devices as a remote, it uses Type-C USB for data syncing and charging.

Overall, the Honor 8 Pro is great well designed power packed smartphone. Be it performance, cameras, display, battery or software, it has got everything right with a perfect balance. It delivers a very good flagship like user experience and can be a very good alternative to the OnePlus 5. It offers some serious value for money and is one of the best phones under 30000 Rs.

3. Moto Z2 Play:

Motorola has launched an upgraded variant of its popular modular smartphone Moto Z Play, as the new Moto Z2 Play. It supports all the new and existing Moto Mods but, let’s come to it later and start with the design first. The Moto Z2 Play comes with an almost similar design like the Moto Z Play but, it is much thinner at just 5.99 mm and also comes with a premium metallic back this time. It looks beautiful with antenna lines surrounding all the edges of the back and the big circular camera unit, although it has big hump. It is really thin and scores very good in the design department… Expand Review

It sports a 5.5. inches Full HD Super AMOLED display which has excellent colors, good brightness and a very good overall quality. The Moto Z2 Play is powered by the 2.2 GHz octa core Snapdragon 626 processor paired with 4 GB RAM and Adreno 506 GPU. At this price, one expects a powerful processor from Qualcomm’s ‘Snapdragon 800’ series but even with the Snapdragon 626 the performance is very good. It can handle multitasking and gaming very well and doesn’t heat up as well. It packs a 12 MP rear camera with Dual Autofocus Pixel, ƒ/1.7 aperture, Laser Autofocus a full Pro Mode, Auto Night mode and dual-LED flash. The picture quality is very good and significantly improved over the Moto Z Play. It can record 4K videos at 30 fps. The Moto Z2 Play packs a 5 MP front camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture Wide-Angle lens, beautification modes and a dual-LED flash as well. It clicks good selfies and due to the flash, low light selfies also turn out very good. It runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Stock Android UI, which comes with few Motorola enhancements like the Moto Display (shows time and notification icon when screen is lock), Moto Voice (a voice assistant, which when asked, for example, “show me the weather”, quickly shows the weather app), Moto Actions (helpful actions like twist the phone to open camera, chop twice to turn on flashlight, etc.). It packs a very fast and responsive fingerprint scanner which, apart from unlocking the phone, also locks the phone when long tapped. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support and packs in 64 GB of onboard storage which is expandable via microSD card through a dedicated slot. It comes with Water repellent nano-coating which helps you with occasional splashes. The Moto Z2 Play is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports Motorola’s TurboPower fast charging. Now, coming to its most important feature, the Moto Mods, to explain in details, Moto Mods are the swappable back covers which attach to the phone via strong magnets and can be interchanged very easily. There are various Moto Mods like the Insta-Share Projector Mod which converts your phone into a mini projector and can prove very handy for small presentations and meetings, the new JBL SoundBoost 2 Mod which adds loud rich quality stereo sound to your phone, it also comes with kickstand so pull it and there is no need to carry any other portable speaker for music, the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod, which converts your phone into a true digital camera with 10x optical zoom, xenon flash, physical shutter and zoom buttons and grip like standard cameras, the Incipio offGRID™ Power Pack Mod which is a powerbank mod and adds extra battery life to the phone and also the Moto Style Shells which give different styles and looks to the phone. The Moto Mods are obviously great additions to the phone, but they come at a price which is very big!

Overall, the Moto Z2 Play is very well designed slim phone with excellent cameras, great display, good performance, good battery life and great stock Android software. It is an all round phone with good balance of everything. And when you add the Moto Mods to it, the experience goes to a whole different level with great capabilities added to your smartphone. Even if you give the expensive Moto Mods a miss, it is still a very good smartphone.

4. Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017):

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy A5 (2017) which serves as a mid budget flagship phone for the company. The Galaxy A5 (2017) is one of the first Samsung phones in India to support its new revolutionary ‘Samsung Pay’, which enables you to store your card information in your phone and pay wirelessly. It works with almost all the POS machines in India and to make a payment, all you need to do is, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, use fingerprint or pin to authorise the transaction and place the phone against the POS machine and your payment is done… Expand Review

securely. Samsung Pay is really a great technology and makes life easier and the Galaxy A5 (2017) supporting Samsung Pay is one of the best thing about the phone. It comes with a very beautiful and premium looking design with nice curved glass in the front and rear blending seamlessly into the metal frame. With round edges, it is comfortable to hold. The Galaxy A5 (2017) gets full marks in the design department. It comes in a 5.2 inches screen with Full HD Super AMOLED display and has excellent quality. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with an Always On display instead of the notification LED, it consumes very less power and turns the display black and white and shows time, calendar and other important notification icons, it is a nice handy feature. It runs on Samsung’s own 1.9 GHz Octa Core Exynos 7880 processor which comes coupled with 3 GB RAM and Mali-T830 GPU. The Exynos 7880 is much like the Snapdragon 625 processor, it delivers very good performance without overheating and is battery efficient also. Apart from smooth day to day usage, heavy games and multitasking are also handled well in the Galaxy A5 (2017). It features a 16 MP f/1.9 aperture rear camera which has very good picture quality. For selfie lovers, the phone packs another 16 MP f/1.9 aperture camera in the front, which again takes beautiful and detailed selfies. Both the cameras handle low light performance well also. Both the cameras can record 1080p (Full HD) videos only, apart from 4k recording capability, OIS is also missing in the phone. The camera app also includes various filters and a Pro mode. The phone still runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow but will get the Nougat update soon. It comes with Samsung’s new Grace UX which is a lighter version of the Touchwiz UI. The Grace UX looks better and has some added features and themes support, it also has one handed mode. Another great thing about the phone is, it is IP68 Water and Dust resistant so, you can wash your phone or jump inside a swimming pool with pride and no fear at all! The phone has an accurate fingerprint scanner situated on the home button below the screen. It uses USB Type-C port for data syncing and charging. The Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with two sim slots and a separate microSD slot. It has 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable upto 256 GB. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery which delivers good battery backup and supports Samsung’s fast charging which fully charges the phone in around 80 minutes.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is a great beautiful smartphone with correct balance of everything. It offers many flagship like features and there is hardly anything bad in the phone. It gives a premium and pretty balanced user experience and specially Samsung Pay makes it even greater. The only thing which goes against the phone is its price. It doesn’t use a top of the line processor and still costs on the higher side while its competitors offer much more at the same price. But still, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) offers many reasons to go for it.

5. Apple iPhone 6 (32 GB):

The iPhone 6 is Apple’s 2 generations old smartphone which was launched in 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB storage options, out of which the 16 GB variant was available around 30000 Rs. for quite some time now but, we never recommended going for the 16 GB variant as it is very low storage and despite having a good phone, you could never use it to the fullest because of running out of space most of the times. But now, Apple has released a new 32 GB variant of the iPhone 6, keeping everything else the same. So the big question is, how good the iPhone 6 is in the lot of some great and powerful Android smartphones? Let’s find out… Expand Review

First and the most important thing one must remember to understand the iPhones is that, they will never blow away your mind with the spec sheet but are equally capable of handling everything so, we can’t just start comparing this phone with the Android phones out there, iPhones are all about excellent user experience with quality hardware/ software and attention to minute details. The iPhone 6 comes in a beautiful metal unibody design which is extremely well-built and sturdy, at 6.9 mm it is thin and comfortable however, it is slippery also. It weighs at just 129 grams. It comes in a 4.7 inches Retina HD (750 x 1334 pixels) display with 326 ppi pixel density and has very good quality, although it is not a Full HD display but it is good. The iPhone 6 runs on the 1.4 GHz Dual Core Apple A8 processor coupled with 1 GB RAM and PowerVR GX6450 GPU, you must be thinking that a Dual core processor and only 1 GB RAM in 2017? Yes, that sounds terribly low but the performance is good, it scores 59,947 in Antutu benchmark v6.2 and can still beat many of the Octa core, 3/4 GB RAM Android phones. This is possible due to Apple’s tight integration between hardware and the iOS which, because of its fundamental structure and working, needs much lower RAM to function smoothly, you can understand this from Apple’s newest iPhone 7 which still has only 2 GB RAM and a Quad core processor and has one of the best performances in the world. So apart from numbers, the phone runs very smoothly and doesn’t slows down with time, it can also handle heavy gaming very well. Coming to another strength of the phone, its 8 MP rear camera, again don’t go by the numbers, it is excellent and clicks great photos. When it comes to the front, it has got a 1.2 MP selfie shooter, which again is not as bad as it might sound but honestly, at this price there are much better selfie centric phones so, it’s not for selfie lovers however, if you click selfies occasionally, then it will do the job, it clicks decent/acceptable selfies. Above all these, the best part of the phone is the software which powers it. It runs on Apple’s latest iOS 10.3 which is a great mobile operating system, if you are an iPhone user you know what it is and if you are an Android (it is a great mobile operating system as well) user, you will find it completely different and exciting to use. The iOS 10.3 is very user friendly, there is Siri, Widgets, Notification centre, Control centre and more. You also get some great apps by Apple and some popular iOS exclusive apps as well. The whole experience with the iOS 10.3 and even the UI is very beautiful. You also get a fingerprint scanner situated in the home button below the screen, called as Touch ID. Apart from unlocking the phone, it can be used to authorise purchases from the App store or payments via Apple Pay (not available in India) and is also integrated into many third party apps for security. The audio via speakers and the headphones is rich and loud. Sadly, it is a single sim phone with 4G and VoLTE support. The 32 GB onboard storage is not expandable. The iPhone 6 is backed by a non-removable 1810 mAh battery which delivers around a day’s battery backup with moderate usage.

Overall, the iPhone 6 is a great phone. It is beautiful premium compact smartphone with good performance and excellent rear camera and delivers a great unmatched user experience with its beautiful user friendly software plus, it also carries the brand value of Apple which gives an unbeatable feeling as well. All in all, a great device with good value for money. And for users looking for a premium compact smartphone, the iPhone 6 is the best phone under 30000 Rs.
